Huron East joins Trust, MVCA in dam project
Huron East has committed up to
$6,000 to the replacement of the logs
at the Brussels Dam with the funds
to be paid out of the municipality's
Parkland Reserve Fund.
Council made the decision to fund
one-third of the project cost with
little discussion at its Jan. 12
meeting.
The process began early last year
after a presentation to Huron East
Council by Phil Beard of the
Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (MVCA). Beard told
council that the logs at the Brussels
Dam had rotted significantly and
would need to be replaced sooner,
rather than later.
Early estimates stated that
replacing the logs could cost as
much as $25,000. However, by the
time a MVCA representative
presented updated costs to the
Brussels/Huron East Community
Development Trust in late
December, the cost estimates had
decreased significantly to $18,000.
Stewart Lockie, who spoke to the
Trust at its Dec. 17 meeting, said the
MVCA was willing to pay one-third
of the project.
At that meeting, the Trust agreed
to float the MVCA the remaining
two-thirds of the cost, stating that
the Trust would pay one-third, but
would seek payment of the
remaining third from either the
Municipality of Huron East or from
local service groups.
At council's final meeting in
December, Lowe then raised the
issue, asking for a report on the
municipality's Parkland Reserve
Fund, including its current balance
and how it's used.
In his report, presented to council
at its Jan. 12 meeting, Chief
Administrative Officer Brad Knight
said that the current balance of the
reserve is just over $4,600.
Funds are always being added to
the reserve, Knight explained,
saying that newly -created lots and
the sale of municipal road
allowances regularly generate
funds for the reserve.
Council passed a motion to
contribute one-third of the total
project cost up to a limit of $6,000.
While the project has been
projected to cost $18,000, at the
Obituaries
Dec. 17 Trust meeting, Lockie said
there is a strong possibility that the
MVCA will be able to sell the old
logs, netting approximately $1,500,
which could be put towards the
project to bring down the net cost.
