food and farming practices and this
publication does just that"
Kelly Daynard manages the
project on behalf of Farm & Food
Care. She said that she's pleased to
see the country's entire food and
agricultural community rally behind
this initiative. "We've seen
everything from farmers who have
hand -delivered copies to the waiting
room of their doctors' offices and
lawyers to dieticians using them in
their work to businesses that have
ordered thousands of copies for their
staff and customers," Daynard said.
She added that the examples also
include an Ontario Junior Farmer
Club that purchased 5,000 copies to
hand out at events in its region, Farm
& Food Care Saskatchewan that
inserted 350,000 copies of the digest
version into shopping bags in Co-op
grocery stores and the PEI
Federation of Agriculture that
inserted 20,000 copies in the
Charlottetown Guardian.
Since the release, copies have also
been mailed to politicians across
Canada, dietitians, schools,
professional home economists,
media, grocery store and butcher
shop owners and other target
audiences. The digest was also
inserted in The Globe and Mail in
March of 2015 and will be

account for staff time from
employees in the Huron County
Planning Department, Scott Tousaw,
Director of Planning and
Development, said that the 500
hours spent on the trail over the last
three years has been absorbed by
current staff schedules and that the
funding could be re -allocated to be
used on trail development, as G2G
Inc. had requested.
If the county were to contribute
$70,200, G2G Inc. would then
contribute $105,800, while the
province rounds out the funding with
$175,000.
Some councillors were frustrated
by the request after being assured the
county would not have to contribute
funds to the project, while others felt
that after all the work that had gone
into the project, it would be
irresponsible not to provide
funding.
Warden Paul Gowing said that
G2G Inc. was "building an asset" for
Huron County and that the county
should be seen as a partner in the
process.
"I'm supportive of this moving
ahead," Gowing said.
Howick Reeve Art Versteeg, who
had said from the beginning that he
was supportive of the trail, but not at
the cost of contributing taxpayers'
dollars, said he was concerned with
the request and what it meant for the
future of the trail.
He said that after the county was
assured that G2G Inc. didn't need
any county money, they now needed
county money. He also said that the
county has been assured that trail
maintenance will be handled by
G2G Inc. by way of stewards and
that's another agreement he could
see collapsing down the road.
While he hated to leave provincial
funding money on the table, Versteeg
similar insertions in other business
leader publications.
Farm & Food Care Canada is now
working towards distribution of the
next million copies. Anyone with an

said he could easily foresee a future
where the county owns and is
responsible for the trail and he had
major concerns with that
proposition.
VanderMolen said, as he has in the
past, that the trail addresses a
number of issues that the county has
made initiatives in recent years, such
as active transportation, youth
retention and economic
development, among others.
In addition to the usage and
economic spin-off that tourism and
trail usage would create,
VanderMolen said, local contractors
would be used for as much work as
possible, resulting in economic
benefit for the county as well.
Central Huron Deputy -Mayor
Dave Jewitt said he was concerned
with the timeline of the funding
request and that, as a result, council
would have to again go against its
policies.
Because the process was already
so far behind, Orchard said, council
needed to make a decision at its Jan.
20 meeting, rather than adhering to
its established grant policy, which
dictates that a report be prepared and
that council makes a decision at a
meeting subsequent to the meeting at
which the request is made.
Huron East Mayor Bernie
MacLellan said he was supportive of
the funding, but that a clause should
be written into the motion that states
the county will only contribute the
$70,200 if the rest of the funding is
approved at the provincial level.
Orchard agreed and made that
amendment.
Council approved the motion to
provide an additional $34,200 to
G2G Inc., in addition to the existing
grants of $20,000 and $16,000. The
motion will be ratified at council's
next meeting, scheduled for
Wednesday, Feb. 3.
