Cable presented with Citizen of the Year award A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 The winter has arrived with all the variety that we expect. Squalls, accumulation as well as the beautiful days like Saturday with sunshine as the bonus. Our snow -filled weather of last week offered me e-mails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Edmonton, Alberta, Creston, British Columbia and Hamilton. Pictures of a car with only a peek hole through the snow - laden windshield had family and friends wondering what the people of Brussels were thinking. I replied it was another mystery in life. Ralph has spent the last week visiting with Barry and Josie Watson in Tuscan, Arizona and reports sunshine and 75°F, I replied -13°C and diamonds on the snow and we both were happy. The folks who own snow machines had a lovely weekend. The trails were groomed, the sun was out and the company was great. Watching the many coloured snowmobiles zipping by from our back window was fun. The soccer field area seems to be a good resting spot for several machines to congregate. The 2015 Citizen of the Year Sandra Cable was honoured after church on Sunday. Citizen editor Shawn Loughlin thanked the several people who nominated Sandra and then spoke of the beginning of the Citizen of the Year as a way The Citizen could thank the community. He reviewed the many ways Sandra has contributed, first in her role as clergy at Brussels United Church and, in the years of her retirement, the groups she has helped along the way. Hank TenPas from The Citizen's Board of Directors spoke of Sandra's gifts to Brussels area and presented her with an engraved plaque. Church friends contributed to the event with kind words, a scroll, orchids and a hat suitable for this grand occasion. Sandra's children Jeff, Jodi and Jana, their partners and grandchildren Nicolas, Emily, Eric, Jack and Grace from the Forest area were able to attend worship, the presentation to mom and grandma, then on to a family celebration at mom's. So another happy day for many. Keep up the good work Sandra. Take care of yourself. Bye now, Betty G.W. Presentation At Sunday's Brussels United Church service, The Citizen honoured long-time pastor Sandra Cable by presenting her with her 2015 Citizen of the Year award, with many of her friends and family members in attendance. Presenting Cable with her award is Hank Ten Pas, a member of The Citizen's Board of Directors. (Shawn Loughlin photo) At the Branch FROM BRUSSELS Lions to host Legion breakfast By Jo -Ann McDonald It's another week and almost the end of the first month of 2016 at Brussels Legion Branch — hard to believe how time flies! Cadets met Tuesday evening and are busy making plans for many upcoming events including their winter camping weekend. The Thursday night dart league had 10 darters enjoying the evening. Winners were: first, Marlene Rut- ledge and Sandra Josling; second, Daisy Wong Schmidt and Wayne Smith; high, Sandra, 100 and Penny Reynolds, 88. The group welcomes anyone wishing to come out for a night of fun anytime they can. The power of the press, or lack of press, my fault entirely, was evident at the Friday night supper. A very small, really small group came out to enjoy the roast beef dinner. The dinners returned, but the folks forgot! This week will be ham and scalloped potatoes and the next week will be chicken breast. Hopefully we have a few more out to enjoy. Two teams of Comrades went to Kincardine for zone euchre on Saturday. Team one was Paul Machan, Norm Dobson, Glenn Bridge and Lloyd Glanville. Team two was Eric Ross, Deb Ross, Barry O'Krafta and Bob Richardson. The group had a good day and one team finished fourth and the other seventh, so they will both advance to district play in Mitchell. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 12 tables of players. Winners were: first, Betty Thompson and Nancy Turner, 74; second, tied, Edna McLellan and Judy Hahn, Ariel Wood and Pauline Bennett and Earl and Jean Foster, 72; third, Murray Forbes and Hank Johnston, 70; lone hands, John Brown and George Bacon, five; low, Shirley Hopper and Loretta Vanstone, 46. The Branch thanks Bush Whittard and his emergency helper Jean Bridge. The Sunday night dance had a good crowd enjoy the music of The Country Versatiles. The Brussels Lions have taken on the task of hosting breakfast at the Legion. They have chosen the third Sunday of the month and are hoping for a good turnout. The venture is to support the addition at the Legion. The Huron East Heritage Committee is pleased to announce The 2016 Heritage Week Amateur Photo Contest!
