Walton Hall plays host to McGavin Christmas
PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

Last week started as a stormy one
with some schools off on Monday
Jan. 11, then continued with two
more days of nasty weather and
most schools closed and busses
cancelled. There was lots of snow
and children had a chance to make
snowmen, go tobogganing at the hill
in town and enjoy the fun of
shovelling!
The men that do snow removal
finally had a chance to make use of
their machinery and thanks to the
town guys who really kept the streets
of Brussels looking so good.
Then the mild temperatures on
Friday and the rain took the snow
away, followed by the deep freeze
setting in and then there was ice.
What a stretch of weather! And then
it starts again. Stormy weather
blanketed our area again on Monday
Jan. 18, and schools were cancelled
again! It was very deceiving at
times, because we could see just fine
and then a squall moved through and
we couldn't even see the shed! I
guess we are paying for the
wonderful pre -Christmas weather.
Our get -well wishes go out to
Graham Work who is a patient in
Seaforth Hospital at this time. We
hope he can soon return to Huronlea.
We hope Bill Stephenson is
feeling better after a stay in hospital
and will be back to Huronlea as well.
McGavin Farm Equipment held its
Christmas party at the Walton Hall
on Jan. 9. They enjoyed a delicious
meal downstairs and then wonderful
entertainment by a hypnotist
upstairs. He was Casey St. John
from Guelph and was great. The
group learned a few interesting facts
about their co-workers during the
evening! The group of about 60
people enjoyed the remainder of the
evening socializing.
The Cranbrook Dart Club held the
second night of play on a blustery
winter night. There were 18 players
who ventured out to Cranbrook. The
18 players had a good night, but it
was team 7 of Brad Speiran and Pat
Gillis who won their six games.
Marita LeFor was the high lady
hitting 110 and Jim Blake hit 133 for
the high man. Pat Gillis was the
winner of the lucky shot for the
night.
We wish Donna McClure the best
in her new surroundings in Blyth.
We will miss her around the Walton
area.
Celebrating birthdays this past

OMB dismissed appeal of JL home rezoning
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
An appeal to the Ontario
Municipal Board (OMB) filed
against a large Seaforth development
was dismissed last week after a short
hearing in Seaforth.
Brian Barnim, a developer and
former Central Huron Councillor,
filed an appeal in October against
the JL Retirement Development — a
large retirement home set to be built
in Seaforth — and a related zoning.
His case was dismissed quickly,
however, as he didn't meet the
requirements to appeal the decision,
having not made a written or oral
submission ahead of the
public meeting, which was held last
year.
Making the case for the
Municipality of Huron East at the
Jan. 13 hearing in Seaforth was the
municipality's solicitor Greg
Stewart.
Stewart stated that Barnim did not
qualify as a person entitled to bring
an appeal and furthermore that the
appeal was not made in good faith.
The municipality, through its
solicitor, will be filing for recovery
of costs associated with the
proceedings.
Huron East Council was brought
up to speed on the project and the
OMB proceedings at its Tuesday
night meeting, by way of a report
prepared by Chief Administrative
Officer Brad Knight explaining the
proceedings.
500 county hours spent on G2G
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
To date, 500 hours of Huron
County staff time has been spent on
the Goderich-to-Guelph (G2G) Rail
Trail, states a report filed by Huron
County Director of Planning and
Development Scott Tousaw.
The question was raised several
meetings ago when representatives
from G2G Inc. asked that the
$16,000 in Huron County's 2015
budget originally allocated to pay for
staff time be instead used on actual
trail development.
Several councillors were
concerned with the request, which
came late last year. They felt that the
"money" had already been spent by
way of staff time and shouldn't
still be in the budget to be re-
allocated.
Tousaw said that 140 hours of staff
time were spent on the trail in 2013,
160 hours in 2014 and 200 hours in
