Central Huron Secondary School
(CHSS) held its annual co-op
appreciation event last Thursday
recognizing the effort of students
and local employers alike.
Originally scheduled for
Wednesday, January 10, the
breakfast event was postponed due
to weather, however, despite the
delay, dozens of students and
businesses were recognized for
learning and teaching each other
about the working world.
Plaques (or stickers, for repeat co-
op positions) were handed out to the
businesses while students prepared
special display boards showing what
they had learned and how it was
going to help them make decisions
about their life.
Shane Taylor, one of the co-op
teachers for the school, said he was
excited to host the event and happy
to have as many employers show up
as could despite the less than ideal
travelling weather.
Huron -Bruce MP Ben Lobb was
also in attendance. A CHSS alumni,
Lobb said that the importance of the
co-op program could not be
overstated, adding it was great to see
how many students were getting out
in the world and seeing what could
be offered.
One such student is Walton's Sean
Mitchell who was involved in the co-
op program with Huron Crown
Attorney Teresa Donnelly.
"I definitely learned a lot there,"
Mitchell said in an interview with
The Citizen at the breakfast. "The
co-op program is a great thing to be
involved with."
Mitchell's work included what he
had expected, handling documents
and working with Donnelly, as well
as working with other programs like
the Victim Services and
Victim/Witness Assistant Program.
"Some of what I saw and did was
a real eye-opener," Mitchell said.
As for the future, Mitchell's
display board explained how he
could see his plans, which include
environmental engineering, being
something he could see himself
turning into a career in law.
Mitchell was one of many students
given a certificate, as well as a wall
poster to mark the successful
completion of the co-op program.
Some of those students may even
be hired on for jobs thanks to offers
available to The Centre for
Employment and Learning.

A snow family
While many students at Hullett Central Public School felt they needed to build snow forts after
last week's dumping of snow, some decided to take a more pleasant approach and craft and
dress snow -people like Peyton Bradley, left, and Leah Boven did on Friday. (Denny Scott photo)
from the centre and another CHSS
grad, explained that job grants were
available to allow co-op students
who have graduated, the chance to
carry on with their experience at
In"
local employers.
"We're also able to help students
looking for full time or summer
jobs," she said. "That help
is always available"
