January is doing its thing and
giving us all the weather features
that we so often chat about.
For those who are choosing
Brussels as home base, all is well, as
long as you have the winter supplies
available. Just like the squirrels, we
need to have a few essentials in the
cupboard, then the weather can blow
all it likes. The open weather is great
for travel, the soil, the ski hills and
the school kids are all appreciative of
the interesting weather of the last
week or so.
When you're house- or snow-
bound in the next month or two, take
some time and think about our
community, what makes it good and
then think about events or things that
could make it even better. The
concrete thoughts can be shared with
at least two friends, if they see merit
in your idea, then move those
thoughts along to the groups you

Legion, with its executive firmly in place after being officially installed after last year's annual
meeting. From left: Second Vice -President Kevin McArter, Advisory Councillor Harvey

The stormy weather of last week
resulted in the cancellation of the
Cadet meeting. The rule of thumb
for Cadets is "no school, no Cadets".
The stormy weather didn't stop the
Huron County Beef Producers from
holding their annual meeting on
Wednesday evening though. The
crowd was down somewhat, and
dinner started late, while waiting for
many to struggle through the snow,
but finally 55 people enjoyed the
roast beef dinner. Brussels Legion
A correction
In the Jan. 14 issue of The Citizen,
a story from Morris-Turnberry
Council misidentified a potential
property development as cottage
land when it is actually cottage
industry land.
Land -usage for a cottage industry
property would more reflect what
was stated later in the story with
residential and industrial usages
being paired together on a single
plot of land.
Council was briefed on two
projects, one on the current Mait-
Side Orchard, which is in Huron
East, and one on Bob Pearson's
property to the west and in Morris-
Turnberry.
As originally reported, the
outcome of the discussion was that
council approved in principle the
farm -related cottage park industry
proposal presented by Pearson and
Dave Rapson.
The Citizen apologizes for any
confusion caused.
Branch workers included Judy Lee,
Linda Bird, Jo -Ann McDonald and
volunteering to help with dishes,
Lloyd Glanville. Great job by all.
The men of the Huron County
Dart League gathered at the Brussels
Legion on Saturday afternoon for
their bi-weekly competition. They
had a good day as usual and
Comrades Monica Richardson and
BJ Hummel did a great job.
The media has brought attention
to the fact that there are many
homeless or near homeless veterans
in our country. The Royal Canadian
Legion began a program in 2009
called "Operation Leave the Streets
Behind". Since its inception in
Ontario, 425 homeless veterans and
almost 1,000 in Canada have been
assisted with immediate financial
assistance and support by
connecting them with the
appropriate social and community
services to establish a long-term
solution to meet their needs. They
also understand that many veterans
are not coming forward to be helped
and prefer to "couch surf' or refuse
to use facilities offered by shelters.
If you are a veteran or you know a
veteran that is homeless or near
homeless, you can contact your local
Branch for information or call toll
free 1-877-534-4666 and ask about
the homeless veterans program.
The Royal Canadian Legion
Bursary program for descendants of
veterans is at hand. It is the time of
year for students who require
assistance to apply for student
bursaries. Children and
grandchildren of veterans, ordinary,
life, ladies auxiliary and children of
an associate member, can apply for a
$500 bursary from the Royal
Canadian Legion to assist in their
post -secondary education.
The student must have applied for
Ontario Student Assistance Program
(OSAP) and deadlines for bursary
applications is the last Friday in
March. The responsibility for the
application form rests with the
applicant. Bursary forms and helpful
information and guidelines may be
obtained from any Branch of the
Royal Canadian Legion. Drop in
today and inquire about an
application.

usually attend. If more people see
reality in your idea, then let it fly.
A group with a goal, energy and
enthusiasm can make things happen.
So use your snow days to make our
community better, not waste your
time muttering.
Jean Davidson is doing research
into our healthcare system and is
getting better daily, because of that
time spent. So if you miss her red
vehicle out and about, call her and
tell her you miss her. Don't talk
long, she should be resting.
Jeanette Boynton is having a
change of scenery this week. She's
having a few days of northern
weather with Brussels friends to help
move January along. Be sure to say
hello when you see her again on our
streets.
The winter months are mentally
hard on folks. Keep an eye, be sure
to call and reassure folks that this too
will pass and that better days are
coming. In summer people are
outside, admiring new growth and
colour, the sunshine and activity.
When snow is the major event and
boots and coats are cumbersome, it's
pretty easy to become isolated."
"Stinkin' thinkin"'can take over and
our minds take us to places that are
not good for our overall health. Just
be aware that mental health is just as
important as your physical
wellbeing. Be alert to dark thoughts
and just like a sore throat alerts you
to bodily changes, your thoughts are
indicating your mental health. Body,
mind and spirit need to balance to
stay healthy and that's how we need
you to be. Make a call or a visit part
of your wintery day.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
