PEOPLE AROUND
AUBURN
Building up
Every year Huron Chapel members head to El Salvador to help build homes and structures
for the people of the impoverished nation. On Jan. 24, members of the church will gather to
bless those making the trip this year. Shown are photos from previous years. Above, Huron
Chapel Elder John De Jager is shown helping local workers with digging out a foundation last
year, while Chaney Johnson, below, works on a roof of a structure. (Photos submitted)
ESTC site approved for
Transport Canada course
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The Emergency Services Training
Centre (ESTC) site passed one
milestone on the way to having itself
certified to teach marine Transport
Canada courses last week.
The ESTC was approved as a site
for the course, however other
hurdles need to be cleared before
courses can be offered at the site.
Fire Department of North Huron
Chief and ESTC Primary Executive
David Sparling told The Citizen that
the next challenge is having the
curriculum for the course approved.
The marine safety courses that the
centre could host through the two
approvals are a "big deal",
according to Sparling. The centre's
staff has been pushing for three
years to make them a reality.
"It's a big step having the building
approved by Transport Canada, but
there is still more to do," he said.
"We will mark the courses officially
in a big way when everything is
ready"
Watch future issues of The Citizen
for more information about the
marine curriculum at the ESTC.

As I was preaching this past
Sunday in church the snow that has
been evading us for most of this
winter decided to make its first
serious appearance of the year. The
turn in weather has come just in time
for a group of Huron Chapel
members in Auburn who are
readying themselves to leave for a
warmer climate at the end of this
month.
On Sunday, Jan. 24, Huron Chapel
will gather around and give their
blessing in prayer to church
members who will be heading off to
El Salvador for a mission trip. Since
2007 Ed Stein, along with his wife
Brenda, has been heading up a team
from Huron Chapel every year to go
to and build houses for families
which have either lost theirs to
natural causes or have never been
able to afford one.
It costs $3,300 to build one home
and this year the team will build an
incredible 16 homes. Youth from the
church also join these teams to help
with running Vacation Bible Schools
for the children in the area where
the homes are being built.
This year the team will be away
for two weeks and will be working
in the cities of San Vicente and Via
Victoria.
