Blyth's Shaw marks 90th birthday with celebration
A milestone
Charlie Shaw of Blyth marked the beginning of his 91st year on this planet with a party that
included all of his family and friends on Saturday. He is pictured here in front of his various
awards and commendations, including the 2001 Citizen of the Year award and various Lions
Club honours. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
On Sunday, Blyth's Charlie Shaw
turned 90 years old, but on Saturday,
one day earlier, he had lots of friends
and family members at his house to
help him celebrate the milestone.
Charlie Forrest Shaw was born on
Jan. 10, 1926 in Morris Township to
parents Frank James and Elsie Jane.
He attended Morris Township #10
and #8 schools over the years and,
on Oct. 8, 1949, he married Patricia
May McWhirter. Patricia has since
passed away in 2007.
The couple had two children:
Brenda Jane in 1950 and Patricia
Ann in 1953.
The Shaws two daughters gifted
Charlie and Patricia with six
grandchildren, which, through
marriage grew into 12 grandchildren
and then led to 16 great-
grandchildren.
Over the years, Charlie worked as
a licenced electrician, carpenter
fourth class, steam AZ licence and a
welder and a plumber, while also
working at Bainton's Limited for 30
years.
He retired on Jan. 31, 1991.
Charlie has spent much of his life
as a member of the Blyth Lions
Club, being recognized with a
number of service medals and
certificates through his work
with the club. He has now been a
member of the club for nearly 55
years.
Charlie has been honoured with
the Melvin Jones Fellowship, which
is the Lions Club's highest honour
and he is also credited with founding
the Charlie Shaw International
Youth Camp.
In 2001, North Huron Publishing
honoured Charlie with its Citizen of
the Year Award for the Blyth area,
for which he was nominated by his
fellow community members.
To mark Charlie's birthday,
friends, family and community
members were invited to his
Wellington Street home on Saturday
for a special celebration, highlighted
by the presence of Charlie's sister
Nora Stephenson.
