Indoor training marks start o
No, it's not ball weather, but the
Palmerston Marlins Ladies Softball
Association teams start their indoor
training in January.
The Marlins are entering their
24th season this year and will field
five provincial teams on the
diamonds with Squirt,
Novice, Bantam, Midget and
wearing their
Intermediate teams
jerseys.
The Marlins have been a staple
club at the Eastern Canadian
Championships for a bit over a
decade bringing home multiple
medals and awards and, within the
last five seasons, has brought home
two Canadian National
Championship medals. To compete
with city teams from areas like
Mississauga, Guelph, Waterloo and
Windsor the local all -girls ball club
needs to start training the athletes
three -and -a -half months before the
game season begins to hone their
skills and strategies.
The four younger teams will hit
the gym floor this week with teams
training four to five hours a week
until the weather is good enough to
get on the diamonds in May.
Along with successful teams
comes growing team budgets. The
Bantam -age team is hosting its first
fundraiser at the Palmerston Arena
Community Hall on Sunday, Jan. 17
from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Psychic

Community hopes
for Hockeyville win
Doug McArter of Brussels is
asking for community members to
help the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre (BMGCC)
compete in the annual Kraft
Hockeyville competition.
The annual competition, which
will see an arena in Canada receive
$100,000 in arena upgrades and host
an NHL pre -season game has been
vied for by the Brussels community
before.
Last year Doug's daughter Olivia
pushed for the centre to be
considered for the prize, citing a lot
of troubles facing the facility
including the entry to the facility,
heating upgrades and the size of the
dressing rooms.
"Brussels definitely needs some
renovations," Olivia said in an
interview with The Citizen last year.
McArter posted information about
the contest to the Blyth
Brussels Minor Hockey
Association (BBMHA) website
blythbrusselsminorhockey.ca over
the weekend.
Currently, the Hockeyville
competition is in the nomination
stage which closes on Feb. 7 at
11:59 p.m. Those wishing to
nominate the BMGCC need to visit
khv2016.ca/en/nominations/create
and enter their personal information,
followed by information about the
arena being nominated, several short
answers about the arena and
community and pictures and videos
to accompany the nomination.
After the nomination period ends,
voting days will be held on March
14 and March 20.
The first place finisher wins the
$100,000 in arena upgrades and the
privilege of hosting an NHL pre-
season game while a second place
arena will receive $100,000 in arena
upgrades.
Eight third-place communities
will receive $25,000 in arena
upgrades.
Marlins' 24th season
hand to connect people with loved

Her website suggests her

or messages regarding issues in
one's life.
Marlins Chairman Kelly Culp,
who is also the coach of the Bantam
team, stated "the 2016 team that I
have this year is for the most part the
same team that won a silver medal at
Nationals in 2014, I know our
strengths and weakness and we want
to up our game in the offense area
and we have hired a hitting coach to
assist us."
This was a very expensive venture
for the Marlins bantam team and
they had to find a way to fund this
added expense. Thinking outside the
box this team decided not to sell
chocolate bars or chicken to help
raise funds but to invite the
community to the local community
centre to converse with a guest
whose talent is psychic mediumship.
"If anything, it will be
entertaining," said Culp. Due to the
growing public popularity of psychic
mediums, the event will be limited to
the first 100 tickets sold.
Tickets can be purchased for $20
each or by calling Kelly at 519-638-
5341.
