Two Toonie Tuesday set Jan. 19

Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Jan. 10
was Terry Richmond. Ushering were
Laurie Sparling and Nancy Hakkers.
Pianist was Marilyn Scott and choir
director was Katie Dockstader and
Fred Hakkers ran the Power Point.
Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church. The first hymn "
O God, Send Us Your Spirit" was
sung followed by Tanner Brooks and
Harrison Bernard lighting the
candles on the altar table. Rev. Clark
invited everyone to greet one
another. The opening prayer was
said responsively with the sign
language in the response followed
by the singing of the Lord's Prayer.
The scripture reading was from Luke
10:25-30.
The hymn "Come Children Join to
Sing" was sung while the children
came to the front for their story time.
Rev. Clark had made two Lego
fences, one with no hole in it and the
other with a hole in it. He asked the
children what was different in the
fences. The fence without the hole
was to keep the animals in. Jesus
knew that we need a fence with a
hole so we can come and go and can
meet new people. A frown is like
putting a fence around us but a smile
opens the gate to others.
The children went downstairs for
their time of fellowship. The choir
sang the anthem "I am the Light of
the World" with Cheryl Cronin and
Avon Cornell singing the duet part.
Rev. Clark's message to the
congregation was "Re-membering."
Re-membering has little to do with
us remembering something. In
Jesus' time there was a law that said
if you were sick you had to stay
away from other people and were
not allowed to live in the community
with others until you were healed. It
was, and is, a joy to see someone
come back after being sick.
Who is my neighbour? To Jesus, a
neighbour is someone who loans a
hand to someone in need no matter
who they are. We all have a gift to
change things and to show our love
for others. We were invited to pray
and to be aware of those who are not
here and remember them.
The next hymn "When I Needed a
Neighbour" was sung. The offering
was received followed by the
offertory response, the chorus of
"Good King Wenceslas," the
offertory prayer, the prayers for the
people and silent prayers led by Lori
Brooks. The last hymn "In Suffering
Love" was followed by the
benediction and the singing of the
"Three Fold Amen." Lori invited
everyone to stay for coffee and treats
and fellowship.

Witches Walk looks
at joining Blyth BIA
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Bev Blair, one of four individuals
responsible for the decade -and -a -
half -old Witches Walk in Blyth,
approached the Blyth Business
Improvement Area to make sure the
event happens this year.
Last October, the Witches Walk
committee ran into problems
making the event happen because of
a lack of time to meet fire code
requirements and, for the first time
since its inception, the event didn't
happen.
At that time, the Blyth Business
Improvement Area (BIA) offered to
make the committee a BIA sub-
committee to help facilitate
discussions to ensure the event can
continue this year, an offer which
Blair said would be great to pursue
at the BIA's Jan. 6 meeting.
Blair wanted to see what was
necessary to get the event back up
and running. She planned to hold
separate meetings with the Witches
Walk commitee, the BIA and North
Huron staff to keep the event on
schedule for October.
"I want to go to our committee
and figure out our obligations and
expectations and then figure out
everyone else's expectations going
forward," Blair said.
BIA Chair Rick Elliott said he
was more than happy to have Blair
and the Witches Walk meet with the
BIA executive to make sure
everyone is aware of the
requirements to make the Witches
Walk happen this year.
The annual event brings in as
many as 2,000 people who donate to
the event. After expenses, all
proceeds go to local organizations
such as the Blyth Lions Club, local
youth groups, local sports groups
and local charities.
"This is an important community
event and we need to work hard to
support it," Elliott said.
Blair mentioned that the
committee would like to have
businesses or organizations come
forward and be responsible for parts
of the walk, which is held in a
municipally -owned shed behind the
Blyth and District Community
Centre.
"That would be ideal so that we
can focus on the event as a whole,"
she said.
Blair said she would set up
meetings with the township, the BIA
and then attend another monthly
BIA meeting in the future to
determine the best way for the
group's current committee to
proceed.

A New Year's Resolution
(Matthew Henry)
"My times are in Your hand!" Psalm 31:15
Firmly believing that my times are in God's hand, I here submit myself and all my
affairs for the ensuing year, to the wise and gracious disposal God's divine
providence. Whether God appoints for me...health or sickness, peace or trouble,
comforts or crosses, life or death --may His holy will be done!
All my time, strength, and service, I devote to the honour of the Lord Jesus --and
even my common actions. It is my earnest expectation, hope, and desire, my
constant aim and endeavour --that Jesus Christ may be magnified in me.
In everything I have to do --my entire dependence is upon Jesus Christ for strength.
And whatever I do in word or deed, I desire to do all in His name, to make Him
my Alpha and Omega. I have all from Him --and I would use all for Him.
If this should prove a year of affliction, a sorrowful year to me --I will fetch all my
supports and comforts from the Lord Jesus and stay myself upon Him, His
everlasting consolations, and the good hope I have in Him through grace.
And if is should be my dying year --then my times are in the hand of the Lord
Jesus. And with a humble reliance upon His meditation, I would venture into the
eternal world looking for the blessed hope. Dying as well as living --Jesus Christ
will, I trust, be gain and advantage to me.
Oh, that the grace of God may be sufficient for me, to keep me always a humble
sense of my own unworthiness, weakness, folly, and infirmity --together with a
humble dependence upon the Lord Jesus Christ for both righteousness and
strength.
