The
01-3 Citizen
Commercial
closes Blyth
main street
on Jan. 7
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Blyth's main street is set to be
closed from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on
Jan. 7 for a filming of a commercial
featuring local businesses according
to North Huron staff.
A request for closure was
submitted to Huron County, given
that Queen Street is part of the
county's highway system, however
due to holidays, the request wasn't
received by North Huron until the
new year.
Councillor Bill Knott was against
closing the main street in the middle
of the day, stating it would have an
adverse affect on local businesses,
especially the restaurants as the
closure would occur over the lunch
hour, however Public Works
Director Kelly Church informed
Knott that FauxPop Media, the
Goderich-based company shooting
the commercial, was working
on behalf of some local
businesses.
Knott moved to reject the
application due to it being "totally
disruptive", however his motion
failed as there was no seconder.
Councillor Brock Vodden moved
to approve the request as to not
stifle potential commercial growth
and the motion was approved.
Upon questioning, council and
staff confirmed for The Citizen that
such closures often have little to no
lead-time as no specific time frame
for requesting a closure is set out by
the county.
***
North Huron approved its official
plan amendment and zoning bylaw
amendment during its Jan. 4
meeting.
The planning committee, which
reviewed the changes for the final
time at the Jan. 4 meeting, was open
to the public, though no comments
were received, so the documents
should be in effect within a month's
time.
The documents, which have been
discussed at length by council over
the past seven months, included
changes to the flood plain areas in
North Huron as well as minor and
housekeeping changes regarding
surplus farm residences and
agricultural uses.
Reeve Neil Vincent thanked
planner Laura Young for her work
in the endeavour.
***
North Huron Township's
website's service request and
complaint forms were made live as
of Jan. 4.
The forms, which are open-ended
to allow individuals to make
suggestions and complaints to the
municipality can be accessed at
northhuron.ca
A gallery member asked council
if complaints could be made
anonymously, to which Chief
Administrative Officer Sharon
Chambers replied all complaints
and suggestions had to be signed,
however, names would never be
released by the township.
