(Photo submitted) At the Branch Branch back to routine in 2016 By Jo -Ann McDonald Happy New Year and welcome to 2016. It will be a year of change around Brussels Legion Branch 218 and we hope more Comrades will become involved with the Branch. It is never too early to think about joining the executive of the Branch or joining a committee of the Branch. An executive member helps make decisions concerning the operations of the Branch and meets once a month for about two hours. There are 10 meetings a year with the summer off. Committee commitments depend on what committee you would be interested in. The catering committee works year round with banquets, anniversary parties, funeral luncheons, etc. Every year is different on how many events, but with more members on the committee, the fewer events members would be required to work at. The youth committee has events in October/November and then in February/March. The events of posters, essays and poems for Remembrance Day and public speaking is in February/March. The Poppy committee work is from mid- October to mid-November. It requires delivery of Poppy boxes and pick-up, Poppy canvas and assisting at Remembrance Day ceremonies. Like to plan parties or decorating? You could help with the social committee in planning events and decorating for the seasons of the year. Maybe you are the handyman type of guy. The Branch always has little jobs to be done that a handyman could handle along with some helpers. We encourage members to consider helping out at the Branch. Our membership is not as large as it once was and everyone's help would be appreciated. New members are welcome to join the Legion anytime and all are welcome. There are no conditions to joining a Legion except to be a Canadian citizen. No Veteran association is required. Branch 218 asks anyone interested in joining to contact the Branch at 519-887-6562. The Branch enjoyed a quiet time over the Christmas season but returned to events on Jan. 2. The zone competition of single and double darts was held on Saturday. There were 10 Comrades of Branch 218 participating in the day's play. Hoping to be winners in the singles event were Comrades Ron Schmidt, Dan Byersbergen, Tyler Verbeek, Ryan Shaw, Mark Campbell, Eric Ross, Bob Richardson and Cam Ross. Ron will advance to further singles play. Many of the men then doubled up to play the doubles event with Ron and Dan, Tyler and Mark, Ryan and Cam, Eric and Bob and joining them were Ken Bird and Daisy Wong Schmidt. Advancing to further play are Ron and Dan and Eric and Bob. Congratulations to the Comrades for moving on. There are sign-up sheets for euchre at the Branch for Jan. 23 in Kincardine and Comrades wishing to play should sign up early! Routine returns this week with Cadets, darts, cards and dancing. Friday night suppers will not return for a couple of weeks while folks recover from all the overeating at Christmas! The Branch continues to collect items for the food bank, as the need is always ongoing. Bring an item anytime you are coming to the Branch for an event. Pickle ball offered through BMGCC A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Ahhh, January. The rush is over, the visitors gone, the decorations starting to disappear and routines are reappearing. As lovely as Christmas is, writing this on the 11th day of Christmas, you know the song, the end is in sight. December is a lovely time. We think of others more than ourselves, we offer our love in various forms and we enjoy the company of others at a leisurely pace. So here we are in January with brand new 2016 just waiting to see what we will do. Now, what to do? Each year we resolve to be better than we were last year. Learn something, do something, eat healthier, be more active, start a new volunteer position — we need to do all these to be a better person. So this week what will you do? Opportunities are out there, you just need to look a little. Or, what about starting something totally new that you would enjoy. The point is, what are you doing this year that you didn't do in 2015? Gerry Wheeler and Frank Stretton are raising awareness for pickle ball. Well they started sharing the game last summer and now with MaryAnn Thompson's help, the game is being offered to new folks on Tuesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. at the Community Centre. You need sports shoes and some energy. No, wait that comes after the first bounce of the ball. The playing time of pickle ball can be as competitive/fun/fast as you make it — think senior badminton with a table tennis paddle and several add-ons. Come see. You may even want to play. Rev. Gary Clark offers guitar lessons at the United Church on Thursdays at 5 p.m. Jan. 21 starts this session. A new thing to learn and a fun way to keep your brain cells busy. A Christmas present of Being Mortal by Atul Gawande is keeping me occupied. A doctor with good experience in life and work has researched the state of our last stages of life. He looks at geriatric death as a normal part of life and then looks at how we do things at present. Oh my. We could do so much better, but that means we need to talk about the end stages of life and all the things that could happen and most importantly, how we want The Brussels Lions Club would like to thank the community for supporting the Christmas Draw Approximately $2,000 was raised for the Seaforth & District Food Bank and North Huron Community Food Share. Draw Winners: $500. Dorothy Kelly, Brussels $300. Lena Siegers, Brussels $200. Bob Stewart, Brussels Teddy Bear Winners: Jake Leis, unknown Henry, Brussels Hannah Garland, Brussels to live until we die. He cites trials that have worked well in several places, but because of our societal issues and government funding, they are stopped for lack of support. So if you want an enlightening read, get the book, but be prepared to do some serious thinking about what is coming as we age normally. As the January days arrive, keep the mood of Christmas, be kind, be helpful and be sociable and for goodness sake wash your hands. Bye now, Betty G.W.
