(Editor's Note,rThis column, was:
in type for The Centennial issue
but lack of space forced 'us. to.
hold it over until this week.)
It is a wonder.' that ,I haven't
lost my column completely
be . I have), since I have . been
so
.faithless., for 'so' many weeks._
•However, h tell myself that The
Sentinel has so much Centennial
news that'no one would miss the.:
column anyway. When your Cen-
tennial ' has• proved • the bang -yup
hope you will stop and think'just
how -much . of that Success is. due.
to the publicity', given to it by
The "Sentinel. There are .many'
towns, near and far, celebrating
their hundredth , birthday this
sununer, and .I have shown cOP
ies of The Sentinel to. people
from these _towns, near and far,
arid ,they have been amazed at
the amount : of .publicity -given
and the interesting way in which
it 'Was ' presented:
w**
Right' in the. •fruit. season we
now . are, ' and I'M sure all you
housewives; . homemakers,. are
'busy canning.' freezing and Mak-
ing' jun. Strawberries are . over
I could wish the season lasted
during the whole. summer. ; I did.
make some jam, ,using that
method which sounds : so ridic-
ulous ., . . . pouring,' the boiling
water ` over ' the fruit,. ' and .then;
pouring it off; ,One would think
that, you would be pouring ' all
the ,good of : the :: .fruit ; away, but
not' so,. there ,is a nicefresh flay -
our that I' : have never; tasted in.
other Strawberry jams.
We' have a- `'couple sour, ::red-.
,pie cherry tree's in our-: back
yard from • which we have never.
succeeded in. getting', 'one` 'lone
ripe' cherry in the five, years we
have lived here. Before ,they 'got
near the stageto be ready to put
into a pie, the birds, which a-
bound .in our` •back . yard, .hada
feast. But ,this yearwe have:: had
several pies we've fooled the
birds. We have 'a mother and .
four children in the cabin ,,in'.the
'back yard.. I had -' been .noticing
that . the ' '.cherries 'were 'staying'
on the. tree' and. some were .'act-'
ually turning red, and . so I re
marked to . the ' mother that it
'must be the children playing in
the' yard that • was making the.
birds more: careful about steal-
ing my cherries, so now she puts
the baby. 'in' his play pen , out
under• the .cherry. tree, and . he
bangs his toys and shouts, . and
the 'birds fly .high • overhead . and
swear with vigour, and •, the ,cher-
ries ripen, and •I make. pies. May-
be this, is . old stuff to you, but
L 'had never done it before,.. and
I• found it worked very well
I washed and' pitted -the: cherries.
at night, measuredthem and put.
the required, amount' `of sugar
on; put theme ' in the frig until

drained them, heated the 'juice,,
and 'thickened it With cornstarch,
mixed it well with the cherries;
and put it in the • pie crusts. It
was very. successful, the juice was
just the; right thickness, ..and 'no
runniness at all:
We have had our annual' bake,
sale, arid ;•as, usualfor any' ;bak-
ing: sale, I. made sweet .bread
dough, ' and four varieties of
goodies. John always accuses me'
of never making breads' except
for a• bake sale, 'se ..this :tithe' I.
left t• ,p, at home for him, which
he greatly>.appreciated they
didn't:last`'1'ong. I :have 'given you
the recipe for: Swedish coffee
cake, 'which is my ;old stand-by,.
Swedish coffee cake and streusel.
This time I. tried Hungarian cof-
:fee cake, and we , found it : delic-'
ious, very, delectable appearance
too.'
You take:: one-quarter of • the
dough that 'you, have made from•
a recipe • that 'has. .eight • or nine
cups• of flour, a sweet bread re-
cipe,:• that is. Roll it . into a ' roll
about. 20 inches: 'long, and cut' off
bits which: you roll into small,
balls. ` Have a '.tube pan greased;
and place these balls, side by
`side,.. just nicely touching, or
barely; touching, untill. you have
them all in.Then fill in the'.cran
nies with. coarsely Cut candied
cherries,. -and' big seeded raisins;
push :the. raisins intothe dough:
a . bit. -Cover, and' ,let ;rise' until
double in bulk. Bake in a moder-
ately ' hot oven, 375, for 'about
35 .min, utes, or. until :sufficiently:
baked. Invert pan for a few min:,
utes. Then turn out of . pan It
looks beautiful. • Oh, dear! 'I got
ahead of myself. You should roll
each: ball .in melted butter'...,' 1
brush with, pastry brush, arid
then roll. ,in granulated sugar
mixed ' with cinnamon', 6 , tbsp.'
sugar to 2 tsp.'cinnamon. Nicest
served hot: • .. - ' . ,. .'
