'REGRETTABLE!
This Village had a • regrettableexpert
fence last week, which, should prevent the
recurrence of such a situation in the :future.
But memories. are short it . seems, and as
Barnum , saidi. "there's a sucker born every
minute."
The sponsoring organization acted in
good' 'fa'ith in • contracting for a three-day
dramatic and musical presentation, that ,'
on . the face of " it looked like a good ven-
ture to raise some'' funds.:. for ,their, welfare
.work. And money raising events ' are hard
to come by these days.
The. local merchant and ` manufact-
urer were the first .victims. They were ail;
ed fabulous prices for advertising space—
and had they paid it, the Production Com-
pany's .guaranteewould have been ' quickly
oversubscribed and their split of all, .addi-
tional receipts would be that inuch ,more
.'gravy., • .
Sales resistance wasn't what thewriter
expected, but it. was sufficient to result in
the rates being dropped very sharply, but'
still far out of proportion .to the cost of
the advertising. '
But that was only the start, and; there
were ' other .unfavorable developments. The
cast fell far below the advertised numbers,
and wasn't sufficient to is take alla•the .parts,
and with few. rehea , the first night pre-
sentation
was a fiasco; staged in' ;practically
an empty hall. That ended it,. and the dire--
ctor. packed , her 'bags and :,quietly took her
departure..
We have said `before, and. again re-
peat, that any outside scheme that invol-
ves advertising participationon thepart of
local' merchants,should first be submitted
to the Business Men's Executive ., for ap-
proval or rejection. The merchant has the
power ' to ,enforce „this by simply declining:.
to participate unless the project is official-""
. ly approved. 'We don't want. that kind of
business, and we. certainly' regret to see the
merchant . get taken.
