"In Fland'er's. Fields the: poppies blow,,:
Between the crosses, row on row."
As each Remembrance Day .approach,
CIN the words of that familiar poem ring,
in ,many 'minds, and hearts -- but new
generations are growing 'up to whom the
real significanceof those lines; has 'not such
poignant meaning. .
The 'poem has immortalizedthe name'
of Lt.=: Col. John. McCrae who was serving
• ,with the Canadian 114edical • Corgis at Ypres:'
on 'April, 22n. d, 1915,when " the. enemy
launched their first gas attack, But despite
the allies repulsed ` wave • after wave of
the attackers:. It was • seventeen nightmarish
days before McRae's unit was relieved: Not •
only had he . the skill of a surgeonand doc-
tor, but the soul of a `poet, andalthough:.
weary in body and .mind, he came out of
f
the line with the `verses of . his immortal
poem scrawled on .a scrap of •paper..
I 1921 Earl Haig founder of the Brit-
ONTARIO
ish Legio n adopted the poppy as a mem-
orial 'emblem, and theearly poppies were
first known as "Haig Poppies."
Now. they are known as•Vetcraft pop
pies, • for they are made by handicapped
war veterans and serve a threefold purpose.
They, are a •memoraal' tribute to those who
did no`t' return, They aid I'a ..welfare fund
for the relief of distress among ex -service
men and _their dependents Who are not eli-
gible' 'for " government_ assistance- 'Thirdly,.
° the . poppies: are made by : disabled vete-
rans, and provide thein with light `work, '
,,companionship, .and an occupational acti
vity that is ' most important to their . well
being., .
Members of the Lucknow Branch of;
the Canadian Legion will ask you to pur-
chase a poppy, this week -end.. Buy and'
• wear it proudly inremembrance of the
dead and' in aid of : those who 'still carry
the physical and .mental "scars of war. '
