oad Widening; Parking Loi
A •program of road widening,
new sidewalks, and improved
,p'arking . facilities *will be.. rec...
onimended as a' project • for the
1960 Village Council, Reeve
George W; Joynt announced'.: at
the regular meeting of the 'Lions
Club. • on Monday evening:
Lion Joynt was asked to speak
on the proposed, parking prog-
ram which was suggested as a
Lions Club project, but was sty-
rnied . at the last meeting by the,
various. ,opinions as to location.
• ,Speaking as 'reeve,. Mr. Joynt
felt that parking facilities . were
a: •straight ''municipal ' undertak-
ing, and stated that a parking
lot had received consideration
by the Board this year, but they
.took. advantage of •low • paving
costs to extend the paving pro
.grain, to 'exhaust the budget . so
that the parking, lot question
:was deferred.
Joynt recognized
- that. there
• Mr•.
would' be differences of opinion
as .to location, three of whichhe'
mentioned. There was the. park,
with an• access , sidewalk exten-
ded along the arena; secondly,
the • undeveloped: road allowance
on Inglis :st.,. south,'pas't the site
of where the MacDonald 'garage.
is to Abe: built,' thirdly, the corner.
lot, nearby, to the south-west of
the Legion hall; which will like-
ly revert to 'the townnext year,
but; ,would, require a couple of,
feet of fill. • '
More Street Accomodation
:At this point Reeve J ynt'
stated that, be had• `been Tri `ion -
tact with provirrc'al officials re-
garding the .;widening" of Camp-•
bell street on the north , from s
Mason's Garage to the• :United'
church and from Outram st -:.to
~Havelock st. on the south side.
He also stated .that .a new side- 1
walk building :program was un-.:;
der' consideration on botch ..the I
north and'•'south side. .The :walks;.!
can be narrowed' without pedes-
trian inconvenience : that would
permit widening of the :roadway
from two -and -a -half to 3 ' feet
Reeve Joynt also repeated
that a bridge • and service' road
was . being given consideration;
on the north.. sideof the • town.
which would 'tend, to 'remove
transports and ' ,Merchants' ears
and, trucks from the : main 'street,
d He 'concluded his remarks by.
stating that he • felt the Mlimicip=
ality would be in a positionfin,,•
ancially next year ,to provide a
:parka"ng lot ;and that it ,would ,be
recommended to the :1960' Board
that they. decide *hen and
where the project: would ^be' 'car-
ried out; • ••
Lion President: Cecil• .Blake ex-
pressed appreciation of Mr.
Joynt's views; and said he felt
In view ' ':Of tihe differences of
opinions,. it would . be a good
place for the Club to "keep its.
nose out of," although the •matt.,
er' would be discussed ' at an
Executive meeting. •
