GARDEN` SCENTS
AND .NONSENSE
Those melancholy 'days are
here. Y44 remember that *poem?
There is one consolation we may
derive •from the first frosts —
our ,hay., fever 'usually subsides
a bit. There: seems to .be some-
thing good about every season
doesn't there,
It won't be long and we'll 'be
busy planting a new plot of .tul
lips. Now is the time to' get
your •ground -Prepared and get
ready.. • to plant tulips, daffodils,
narcissus, etc. Itis not too early','
nor too. late " • • '
You, could get a nice catch,; of
grass if you- were making a. new"'
lawn right now. Sgme . authori-
ties claim it, is better to seed• a
lawn in the fall.. Work your soil
-up ' thoroughly, ,13roviding' 'plenty
ofhumus and fertilizer. Perhaps
you are interested in making , a
law or renovating' yours.
Make sure your area is ' evenly
graded and well drained. If nec
essary a. liberal dressing of pul-
verized sheep manure and bone
meal can be applied and worked
into' the top soil. Then roll it to
evenly firm it. :.Loosen the sur-
face with 'a sharp rake* and
spread the seed using about one
pound to' . • two hundred square
feet.. To . get a uniform sowing
we suggest you divide your seed
and god across one . way and
then another_ possibly four •diffe
rent ways. A calm,, day ispre-.
ferrable., After the seed is sown
roll again . to •press the seed into
the soil: Then•' :a good soaking is
beneficial:
If, your ' established lawn is
not .quite what it should *be ap-
ply a: liberal• feeding of fertiliz
er. The. bare 'or . scant 'spots
• should•'be raked : and seed scat-
tered • on them. Roll '. and then
soak it. Fall applications of fen:
tilizer to a lawnhas proven more
beneficial • than , Spring" . applica-
tions.. Our short spring is: usu-
ally ..followed: quickly by high
temperature§ which • conditions
pare • favourable' .to , disease. -Mu
-
'ally spring fed' lawns • will dis-
colour,. badly in the • hot .weather.
Fall `:• feeding ' stimulates root
growth and the plants ,are well
established . for feeding. next
.spring One .authority recom-
mends a . high • nitrogen ureaform
fertilizer applied at the rate `of.
.2 lbs.. per hundred ' "square feet:
'So . much for ;:lawns. What
about spring flowering bulbs?.
Have your soil *ell worked •and
enriched. ' Make :sure you plant
them., the proper 'dept; tulips
always look 'best . when • planted
in bold groups using colours
that contrast or blend. What
about , planting some., in pots :to
have bloom, around, Christmas or
shortly. after? •
.
Two 'things should be: remem-
bered when planting 'spring flo-
wering- bulbs for indoors: . Are
they the hardy type or tender?..
The

bring them into the . house and
keep thein, :in a cool dark spot
until the • ,growth • is possibly,
three or four inches high then
gradually :(bring ' them to • the

• THl. LUCKNOW SENTINEL,; LUCKNOW, ONTAI,IO,
to do well in the house..
The tender ;bulbs, Amaryllis,
calla -Lilly, caladium, freesias
need warmer' temperatures arid
are probably grown indoors With
a :higher .degree of success be;
cause they withstand the "corn.-
fortable" temperatures of mod-
ern living rooms. These .do not
'get potted up and stored away
in the cold. The advantage to
,growing the hardy type indoors
is that 'you can have thern stor-
ed away in the cold and just
bring them • • in as you want
them.:
;Single early tulips are; pro-
bahly the easiest to grow in-
doors, ,but many late flowering
types such as 'Darwins can ,be
grown ' successfully,, • A' • deeper
container aid a longer period • of
tirne is all that—is' necessary to
!bring them into bloom success,
fully.
Daffodils, Narcissus, and Hy-
acinths will reward you well •for.
your efforts in bringing . spring
beauty indoors. Why, not, try it?
Good luck. Let's see what .the
scrap book, tells us.
Most of you had a vacation
-Probably there ,was 'some fishin?
where you were ,but did yoti
hear this fish :story? •
g
Two Indians were sitting.: on
the dock for quite some time.
Suddenly • the first'', Indian _ gets.
sonie action and after • quite •a
struggle he hauls in a .beautiful
mermaid. He looked at her loig-
ingly .for a moment then . rem v-
ed : her from the •hook and toss-
ed her' back into the water. The.
second Indian looked...on 'and in-
quired "Why?"
First Indian reply "How?"
We heand of ;a' man who went
to the.: city in search. .of • •em-
;gloyment.. Early one morning'•he
received 'a telegram telling him
he . was. the . father of quadrup-
lets, He . immediately rushed 'to
the employment. agency and said
he had : to .have a high paid job.
"We must know more'about. you"
the manager,'., said, ' "Can • you
sell?" .
•"No."
"Are you an electrician?"
"No."
"Well we must know, just • what
(cavi. you do?" .
"Here, read this 'telegram?'
My. uncle William .has. a new
cedar chest." •
"So the. last time:I saw him .he
just•had" a wooden leg."
Most' girls think the . diamond
is'. the' best ' stepping stone ' to
success. •:
An indignant mother asked hers
yburg son "Why didn't you tell
me you wanted to go fishing?"
"Because," he. said, "I wanted to
go ' fishing.
Intuition ', is what .' enables a
wornan to"put two and .two to-
gether and . get your nuYriber.
. And . don.'t forget,- everyone
likes to seea broad smile
—
es-
pecially
,if she smiles at him.
I , think I,.should tell ;you, • I'
managed to get _in : to Lucknow
Fair. last week and: saw some-
thing pretty. ,nice in the arena;
an exhibit putthere by the
Lucknow and District Horticul-
tural Society. Just thought I'd.
pass, along a remark- I,. heard.
"Just like adding a little bitof
the royal."
