OBITUARY
THOMAS SANDY.
. Thomas -Sandy, a lifelong resi
dent, of 1-IuronCounty and a resi
dent of Goderich for 39 years
died suddenly at his summer re
sidence .at. Ridgewood Park, near
Goderich,on 'Thursday, Augus
13th, in his 79th year. He ,suffer -
ed. a heart attack as he was Pre-
paring to. go fishing in the Mait-
land River near his. summe
home.
Mr..Sandy ndy was for many years
associated with •the construction
industry. At' the turn of the cen=
tury he was actively engaged in
the ,construction of concrete brid-
ges to replace. the many. wooden
structures 'then ' in • use;:. In 1910
he placed cement face over the
Masonry biers on 'the present
Maitland Bridge and the' propos-
ed new bridge was- a local
pim-
rovement . he looked forward to
pr
'seeing done, '
He established the Sandy. Road
Equipment Limited in Goderich
and carried; .out repairs, to 'steam
boats wintering in the local 'har-
bor. He developed' the revolution-
ary, Sandy crusher, one of the
first successful portable gravel
crushing plants:. He formed the
Sandy Contracting Coinpany
which engaged in crushing grav-
el to. supply the needs ,of muni-
cipalities in the area. *Several
valtied..patents are • still owned.
by the company he formed...
In semi.- retirement in 'recent
years,' Mr. Sandy supervised the
restoration by `° his. family of
Ridgewood Park, an historic
estate originally ' developed ;a:
century •' ago by the ' Baron de
Tuyll, . ,
' . Tis many 'patented inventions
constituted a:' contribution to' the
contracting equipment field. He,
was interested in all current.
events and in 'scientific• and 'in-
dustrial
dustriai ,developments. `.One of
his main .hobbies.was' fishing and,
one in'which he engage daily
