Hello folks, right' pow I,- think
you will agree, it is tulip time
• For the past. few weeks .the glor-
ious spectacle seen in Ottawa
is in ' full sway. Even. a ,round
,. i here there area few sights th:alt,
give one' an, uplift.
When we. say tha-
t it is ,tulip;
time, it 'is. so •in more ways than,
ohe, Yoiz may ,see thin bloom
but you should ,also makeem plans
for next year, Now ..is. the time
.you' should be orderi, , bulbs • to
plant in : the fall for next- y, ears
beauty. 'If at all possible I "would
suggest, contact someone in your
Horticulture Society .and arrange
to get 'theni.. to order. bulbs for
you, but :it .must be done .now.
The firms in• Holland like to com-
plete all their arrangements in
June. Just-what,sheuld you get?
If " you have grown tulips for a
while you 'will. -know, what they
are and what you, like, but. those
of:: you .who would • like 'to get
a started let me•.mention a few dif-
ferent varities and types that ;will
providesomething to please ev-
eryone. •
'The three ' .Most' 'common or'
best known' types' are Cottage,:
D;aarwins •and .Breeder. These ,all
bloom about the same time. with
the cottage being perhaps' a little
`earlier and the breeders later:
These three classes probably get
the most publicity and are likely
the" .most .widely ,grown; but the
other typesalso .make a beauti-
ful display ,and, ' help to 'round
out -the;' picture . with weeks -of
colourful display
The :first • Variety.
tobloom in.
the spring is probably the .. spe-
cies and species hybrids,. one of
the most" showy` and :.is` fast be-
coming. one ,of the-, most popular.
is the'Red Emperor. They are
really ' exciting. in. early spring,
i Single ..early:, come next These
stand more .,hard weather than.
most ' varieties, but are smaller:
Can be used indoors in, pots, ',etc.
Double earlies are much ...the
same as the, singles except that,
they have fuller flowers which
last much longer than the :sin g-.
les both in the garden and when
1cut:
Triumphs' and Medel Tulips
these 'two groups fill the gap be
tween 'the single earlies and the.,
darwins.:They. are excellent for
forcing ''having • stiffer ''stems and
more • upright than:. the singles,'
Those ,who like 'a large' full.'dou-
ble •bloom will enjoy the. Peony.'
:flowered varieties, their . large
blooms provide an effective long,=
'lasting colour " .group. :Cottage
tulips• have,' long flexible stems
with rather' long pointed petals.
Darwins have long slender stems.
which .'support huge globular
flowers" in a very, widerange, of
colours. 'Breeder , are very 'up-
right with stout, stiff stems, with
a cup shaped flower 'very often
in two . tones. er 'bi-coloured.
• Parrots '• and •lily, =flowered .'-
,These • two , , groups are • really
strays with distinctive 'flowers
from other classes. They are ,use;
ful as. cut flowers ;orin the gar-
den, ' The: newest varieties listed
are' the hybrid dar•wins. These
have bloorns of unusual size and
Ivigor they 'are' More. expensive
• :but ' are very, rewarding.
When planting make" sure you
have a nice rich soil because us-
ually, tulips look 'their .best• the
first year unless properly cad `
• ! for; Get• good bulbs and plant
them early in the fall. Plant them'
, deeply and you can plant annu-`
ala over them .to complete a sum
mers.. bloom: ' '' , ' '
Again/let me suggest that you
'see someone in your society and
tell themyou want tulip bulbs
to' plant 'in the'fall. • `
