and Friendship'' published by

to celebrate • his eighty-third
birthday,, May 27, 1941. He died.
November 14, 1942.
Mr. Johnston will: ibe remem-
bered by many as a school teach -
Or. For 20. years, he wa secre
tary-treasurer. of the We`iitn
Teachers' Association. In 1920 he
retired..after°, teaching for 20
years in 'Stanley township and
moved 'ta.Exeter where he be-
came bookkeeper,' for the 'H ar'Ve r
Bros. Milling Corrnpany; a posi-
tion'he -held for eight 'years,- re.-:

Johnstone was an active
man during his• long life:. Reared
on .wfarm, he was a son. of Ash-
field. township :pioneers, Henry
.Johnston ` and Mary (Serson)
Johnston. The family moved to
Huron County froan York Coun-
ty • in. 1861. and settle' on, a farm
where • Mr. Johnston grew, up in
the woods and attended Finlay's
School (SS 9, Ashfield) 'after-
wards known' as (Cherry Grove
•School. ..
-At : the •age of 1.4, Mr. Johnston
decided to learn 'the cheesemak
ing, business and for four .years
(1873-77) he -Wasemployed either
a's .an apprentice or maker at the
'factories in .Dungannon,. in. Ash-•

cheesemaking, Mr. Johnston's
parents were ;desirous , that his
education be. continued , and, as
a result, 'he returned :tp school,
•graduated from the Goderich
Collegiate and eventually secured
a • teacher.'s. certificate. In 1880,
he commenced teaching' and for
the' next forty years was actively
and successfully engaged in this
occupation. He first " taught for
eight years h 'his ' own , school,
then in SS 2, Hay for 12 years
and finally. in. SS 14, Stanley
where' he was .'ancharge' for 20
years. These, schools • also had a
large attendance in ' those days
and :part ;of Mr. Johnston's duties
was: t06.0 instruct the fifth .classes
of young, men and ;women.
„Mr, Johnstor was, actively as-
sociated , with' :the' . work "of' the
Methodist and ' later; ' the United
Church, being a lay -clergyman
for more .than 60 years. and a
Bible class .teacher for even .a
longer .period. He was also an
ardent temperance worker.
• In 1877, he wasmarried to,
Sarah, M, Blake,. of Ashfield, who..
'Predeceased him March 22,•• 1941..
They had three sons and, one
