Gordon Finlayson
was, appoint-
' ed chairman of the meeting and
called' on J. H. 'Kinkaid,. 'school
inspector, *he' summarized edu-
cation in Ashfield Township over
the past years.
' He: referred to, the formation
of the Ashfield• Township School
Area some 12. years ago. At that
time there 'were , fifteen ” school
sections. and' about .340 pupils.
About six years' ago • the area
still ' were operating the ; same
number of ;school ' sections., but
the .,enrolment had ' droed to'
about. 260. "At this time",he.
said, "keeping fifteen classrooms
open .was .beyond : the- ability °of,
the tgwnship".
"Don't Close" Our School".: '
Mr.''Kinkaid ` referred to their
in .the. township who . felt . that
the: school tax rate was too high
as the "same ones;' Who yelled,
."don't 'close .our •school" •when.
the board tried to' economize 'and:
provide practical education ;He
stated that the school .sections of
Ashfield township ' were ` laid out
for a population of • 6000 people
which Ashfield once • had. 'Now
Ashfield': has 1600 • residents and
some people still believe the
,same system can 'be used, was
the cornment of the inspector.
In speaking ,of those who: have
gone °rback, tb individual ;school
sections, he. -said; "I make,no
bones about . it,. they're wron"
:Cost and• Education:
In speaking ,favourably of a
two -room school for the sections,
Mr: Kinkaid stated that :he was
setting his thoughts on two
points, the type of education that
would be available and ; the ' cost
of such. .Qualified teachers will
Abe obtained easier with a school
of. this type, He felt that the cost.
to build a school of -this type and
provide transportation would, be
close to ` the present costo edu-
cation' in .the. area. He was of
the opinion. that a school of this
kind should .113 built on the high
way:
-"It is important that we .pro-,
vide the 'best. possible type. of
education .;for a child;": he said.
"We, only have ,one 'chance and
we ..can't • go back and do him
over. again".:
•Chairman. Gordon Finlayson
explained to the group that no
decision was to be reached at the
meeting and that ' they were
there : to "talk things over"
' Other speakers at the meeting
were . Ret:rben' Wilson' and Bob
Simpson, both . members of the
Ashfield School Area.- Mr.
