TO PAY RABIES
COIIPENSAT!ON
('From, .Grey -Bruce F of A)
en the Federations of Ag-
riculture for Grey .and 'Bruce.
Counties' presented their briefs
to.' County Council in January;,
we suggested 'that •compensation
for animals that dieas a result
of 'rabies .. be a three way split,
with County, • Council paying a
third, the provincial . government
a third -and the '''federal govern-
ment .a third.
Our Members 03. Parliament !
for this district brought this sug-
gestion up on the. floor of the
House of ` Commons, The Hon,°
Mr,. Harkness, Minister" of 'Agri-
culture' seemed, to..,gybe interested''
,but said lie' had no request from
producers for this legislature. I•
Eric Winkler, •I P. for Grey .and'[
Bruce,`• .contacted . • Bill. OSrwald
and suggested, tilat . a delegation:
be sent 'to.. Ottawa ' irnrnediately.
We got a very. favourable recep
tion . and . the .'Deputy, Dr. • Tag-
gart,,
ag-gait,, suggested . that the province
and the federal government had•
more. money than the, counties
and that they might be .able to..
do a little . !better • than our.sug-
gestion.
A release was'issued last week
by the Hon.•''R.Tm., Goodfellow.
He said the ;province will pay.
40% of the cost, the: -federal gov-'
ernment: a similar amount and'
the Fpunties. 20%. It will .be: re-:
troactive to' April: 1, :1958.. Maxi-.
mum ,payment for. • cattle ' has'
been placed at $250.0.0 .each;, nor- •
sect• • $100.00; sheep $40:00;' swine.
$40.00 and goats $40.00.
If it had not been for`the Fed-:

would never have received' com-
