DO WE • NEED ':A. UNITED • APPEAL?
•
Th e annual •Red .Cross campaign for
funds is currently being conducted here,
with its, associated organizational work' -and
door-to-door : calls by Folunteer ,workers.
The. Easter Seal campaign was recent-
Iy . concluded; . the Salvation, Army,'s Red
‘Shield appeal will shortly be to the,,fore.
One could mention many other wv r
thy` appeals ° which ` have, or , will, be, held
during- the year. Theres the Polio March
of Dimes fund;, the Cancer. and Heart fund,
the Muscular: Dystrophy appeal, the' Christ-
mas Seal campaign, Scout: Apple*Day, Girl
Guide Cookie Days Bible Society appeal,
tag. `days for hospital auxiliaries, Poppy
Day for war veterans' aid and the annual
appeal for the blind.
No doubt there.• are.other' '.annual ap-
peals which ''do not come to mind at. *the
moment, to say- nothing of many other
local projects that periodicallyy require and
deserve financial support in. various forms.
'So=re may suffer from lack of the thorough
organization that other appeals receive,.
and all may not share equally in relation
to their. need.
This gives rise to, the -•question iof, 'a
"community chest." Whether it would be
•
feasible, or successful is '• a matter of con-
jecture
It would be at least .eliminate . the mul-
tiplicity of appeals, and the'oranizational
work •associated with each individual ef-
fort. It would minimize the number of oc-
casions
c casions when the press is called on ,to, and
readily does, "beat the "' drum," to arouse
citizens to their responsibility . in supporting
these worthy projects.
A Community Chest ' would require
representativesfrom m these various organi-
zations ; getting .together to make their le-
gitimate
needsknown, and to assess, and
evaluate the requirements of the various
organizations in ' the light' of present day
needs. For instance is enough emphasis be-
ing placed on . the cancer and. ,heart funds,
as compared with the polio and tuberculo-
sis appeals, ' two diseasese which have ' a
declining prevalence. -One major canvass
might suffice to ... replace; the 'many individ-

ual appeals.
These might be argued as, some of the
advantages. of a United appeal, ` but would
it work? Would the v..ar'kons appeals loose
their individuality and their • personal ap
peal to those who have shown themselves
sq ready and. willing to support many taus- ,
es, some more .generously than others, as.
.they see, the need. ,
Could, the donations of $1.00, $5.00,
$10 00 to.- i
,ndividual' appeals be. increased
,fivefold' or more to .raise • the• objective.-,
that .a community ' chest 'Would demand?
• This, is ;a subject that merits sone seri- •
ous .thought, in 'this ;day of Countlessap-
peals.. No doubt there will • be : a divergence
of 'views .on the subject; . We would' wel-
come your • opinion in • "Letter to the Edi-
Tor."

AN APPLE A' DAY
,Th Canadian De artznent of. Agricul-
ture
P
ture - has laid emphasis on ' the fact ' that.
cold storages are still bulging with the re-
mains of the 1958 bumper apple harvest,
This gives cause to reflect that it is a
far 'cry, from today's •;six -quart.. basket ' pur-
chases to that period a ' few decades
past when barrels and' bins of .'apples were
the custom ,in most ;every urban and rural
cellar.
• In basements, crammed : with • vegeta-
bles-....
tiles in' sand, ..cabbages in. paper
and with'e fruit• and , pickle -laden. shelves,
there wasalways at least a barrel of spies,
Russets, Kings,.. etc., and for . late ':spring
some of the tough skinned, Ben ;Davis.,
With no oil heating equipment, the,
dirt -floor cellars had keeping qualities, lack-
ing today. Of course, there was always the'
spring clean-up when those apples and ve-
etables,: which 'hadn't kept, had to be re-
moved, and with the- decaying juices often.

The good old days, you say—at least
there were nobulging cold . storages, and
' • that proverbial apple a day was possibly
more •of a reality than in this six -quart bas -
