SELF PROMOTION NECESSARY
The value of Membership in the Geor-
gian Bay Industrial Development Asso'cia-
/tion has,from' timeto time, been question -
,ed, .particularly in the smaller centres and
a number. of municipalities have never felt
impelled to join the organization:.
Lucknow has been a member,,but
each year as= payment of • the '. fee-amunt-
ing to some $90 00, --comes up ' for renew-
al, the question is invariably raised as to
the merit of belonging. This year . the ,coun-
cil has decided against jaining the Associa-
tion.
We don't : know the answer. It is 'dif-
ficult ' to assess the :value, if. any, of such
membership, ' unless... specific benefits .:. are
evident. And without them,":few munici•
palitiet will -continue to 'belong, \for eachis
primarily concer"ned with its own interests
and direct ,benefits. The obtaining of an,
industry in some other centre' is °little moti
vation . for .membership . renewal in ;' centres
that •have. littler to. 'offer, and little 'to gain
industrially, ; in spite of the fact that. there
' is • much to be argued in suport,of the As-
sociation, when one takes the broader over-
all . view.
• Lucknow 'has ' been very fortunate. in
•,
havingBeatty athe` : Ladder Facta' . esta-
blish
blish a plant., here, with " much of : the credit
being focused On Reeve Joynt 'who. spared
no, time of effort. in promoting and encour-
'
aging the . sale of the factory, which 'Thad
been idle for 'ten years.
Mr. Jona implies • that his efforts to:
bring industry to .Lucknow ai e, by no means .'.
ened. "You've got to get outand get after
it," he says, and the inference is that he is
doing just that. There is little ; doubt but
• : that the .personal contact carries more : im-
pact, and holds greater : promisee of results.
But, thereare also other ways to
' 'sella community, and in which most
every person can play a part. An attractive
town, in which friendliness prevails and
good service is renderedby the man behind
the counter, will pay dividends.
This is not a' ,tourist centre in , the
sense of . being ; on the ' lake, but .our proxi
pity - to heavily populated' resorts, and our
strategic location : on a . highway 'that Is tra-
velled by an increasing number of , lake-.
bound' motorists, should make us more
tourist conscious. •
This community ' would do . well to
study its natural advantages and .exploit.
them,. We ' have spacious 'park , accomoda-,.
tion with nearby rest room facilities, Here
is a • potential picnic ground : for, not only
tourists, but ._ family reunions, as .an outing
at the lake has now become so common
place as to have lost some 'of, its glamour..
John; "Fisher, well known commenta-
tor, who . has been apprc nately . named,
"Mr: ':Canada," says: ,':'In their clamor for
more smoke stacks (new industries) many
towns forget that that visitations of people Can.
be a large:industry in itself.
Imagination, 'friendliness, ,service are the
ingredients of 'enticing more . visitors. The,
biggest job is to gettownspeopl and mer-
chants enthused, rather than 'to expect as-.
sociations or governments • to' bring in . the
business.
Again the furore:: will ''rage: as to Can
sada engaging in the world hockey champ-
ionship.. The retaining of •the trophy's. was
little cause for joy, and from radio accounts
of the `.final game,'' Canadians: at home could
iiot help but feel :;a : little chagrined by the
ice performance of our . goodwill.ambassa-
dors. The •sympathy as 'generally, with" the
"under clog and in view of the build up
the •Canadian team • received, they were n
"sine thing." But a victory—or the champ
ionship, for that .natter is not 'tanta-'
mount to a reputation for• good sportsman-
ship; and in that the Canadian team ` was
also . found lacking, according to reports in
some of .the .European : papers. Unaccustom--"=
ed to European hockey, Canadians at least
are no' f onger unfamiliar with the. style or
the. regulations, and the world tournament
can serve little good if it challenges Cana-
dian sportsmanship, by their failure to :ad-
apt 'themselves to what. the. European fans
expect.
