born.
• John went West in his ",teens
and ' was one of the °real pioneer.
homesteaders. 'A house. and .an
ox, made..up : his first .team to
till' the 'land. .• •
Accompanied by his daughter,
this. venerable -nonagenarian re
turned last summer to attend the

edtievery minute of it, and what's
more, he didn't miss .a thing:
Ontario Hog producers may
have to. •take bold steps tokeep,'.'•
•
control .of the sale of their pro-:
ducts Charles McInnes, president
'of the Ontario organization, told
the zannual meeting of the Huron
Hog Producers Association . at
Clinton last • week.
The' possibility now exists, said
Mr. McInnis, that the Ontario,
Hog • Producers' Association may
extend its activities', and acquire
its own, packing plant,. Econo-
mists •. have been eominissioned,
:ne said,' to study the•, idea; and- .. "
report to the association,••.what
might be done ` - . .•
. • "If there : is going to be .verti-
cal integration," he said, "it must,
be from the • producers um"
:. There was a general applause •
from his audience of Huron farm-
ers when. Mr. McInnis' declared: °R•
"We must invade this field; if
they . (the packers)" are going to
invade ours:"
"If we are going to have verti
cal: integration," he said, we must
be loyal to• the consumers who
-have "been • loyal to us, 'and see to
it : that.' they are not. put at the •
mercy of:afew big corporations''.•
• The , poultry Industry, :Pr. Mc- •
Innis: asserted, :.stands as, a wain
ing to . hog producers of what can
happen.,ifcontractfarming enab-
les big processing ,companies to
gain .control over production . on
the farms.. "In the. poultry indus-
try, the producer finds himself a

Against .Farm • Direction ..
A proposal that.• a trial' should-.
be 'given to the idea of directing
hogs front 'the' farm to ,,the . pack --
ng plants, - • and • by-pass 'the ass-
enibly • yards, was •. rejected
Mr. McInnis said there are two..
main objections, to this :proposal:'
One is that' salesmen for the .sales
agency . of the OHPA ` need to
know how many hogs they have -:
.to • sell and : where the: hogs are;
the second objection, he .said, • is
that :the regulations ,that would
apply would make . the; paper
work too 'intricate., •
"We would' like to simplify:the
movement of hogs " as" much as
p'o s:s ib e," said,Mr. , 1VYcInnis.,
"There's nothing wong with' the
idea in principle; but in practice ,
I don't ; think ' we could enforce it
There would ' be •too.. many. legal
difficulties:".' '
