EDWARD THOM
Edward Thom, . a; lifelong re-
sident • of. the 'St.. Helens and
'Lucknow Community passed away
in' Wir g!bam Hospital 'about • 8.30
Wednesday evening, January 21,
• He was ,in. his 86th year having
been born July 4th; 1873 on the
farm:where he• spent four score
years.
He was the last surviving
• • member ' of a family of • nine
children, 'of., Wm. Thom and
Marion Crag, .:..
• Forty-seven years ago r last
r September;•.•he married' Rosemary
Miller, . daughter of : Mr, and Mks,
John Miller, whose • home was
"`,across' the road", , from the Thom
residence, where they made
their home until moving to Luck
.nqw a few year ago.
Ed,,.or Ned, as he was ."fami-
liarly . known in .the community;,
had Many.. , admirable qualities
which the writer- had '.learned to
appreciate' during irnany .years'
•of pleasant associations with this
genial 'octogenarian, who: never
.grew -old. Hiswordwas his bond,
• and he • made and retained a wide
circle of friends, among young

Since 'sprit* Mr,: ,Thorn had
•been in • failing health. He was
hospitalized for two weeks; . but
it Was -not until four• days before.
his death that his condition. gave
• cause, • for concern' and rapidly
worsened. ; •
•' The funeral •service • was held.
at the Johnstone Funeral Home
On. Saturday and despite the Wea-
ther the . chapel was ;filled for
the last :ritesconducted' by Rev.
Gordon' R.' Geiger of • Lucknow
United..Church of which 'he was
a member, . since transferring his
membership ' from Helens,
Many, lovely''floral tributes ex-'
pressed "the respect, in which Ed

ren born to• the late Wm. Ritchie

born. 78 years ' .ago on the, farm
owned. by his nephew; John- Rit-
chie. on the 12th' concession'. of
Ashfield wherehe attended Zion
School and later Lucknow Con-
tinuation. •
As a young man. • he went to
Walkerville where, he foundem-
ployment with.' theCity ` Gas
works • and became a• familiar fig-
ure:as`he made his • rounds on 'a
bicycle to light the l=amps in the
•evening and . againto turn them
out in .the morning. Later he en-
tered .the Canada ' Customs where
he Tose to be Chief Collector; R"' t
position he . held=' until his,•retire-
rnent in 1945, • •
