THE LUCKNOW SENT#NEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO CARAVAN 1 NG GRATIFYING WORK •(By Louise Andrew) - Five wonderful weeks, of . car - 'availing made pp the most ..re- warding ' summer that I have experienced. • In an. attempt ' to share ' my enthusiasin with you . I' will relate; . some of the high- lights of the venture. Four Seasons Retreat • 'Centre on Rice Lake near Peterborough was my ..first assignment. This is • a new church camp which, when completed will 'be similar to Five Oaks at• Paris. i Spiritual 'retreats for ministers,' ,Sunday School teachers, .Young People and anyone interested in streng- thening his, . • faith, . will be con- ducted •here, At Four Seasons the four car- avaners, two •ministers and .four local people .participated in a work Camp. The girls plastered, sanded.and painted 'the library, dining roo}•n • and the halls. Of the new building: Although we teas- ed the boys about standing around they renovated : a rickety old shack into ' .a very . nice tool shed: • . • • ' Every day we had an hour. of • Bible • Study ' which 'was very profitable' ' under the' ' guidance • . of Rev. 'Elmslie "of ' Peterborough.' In;` the evenings ` we had a•` fel- lowship program which includ.. :ed . hymn -sings, • .discussions.: and games.. , For relaxation .:we' enjoyed., the'. 'advantages of the nearby ' lake as well as. occasional Motor .trips through ' the rolling', countryside At Little Britain 'near ,Lindsay .the ' caravaners . • conducted a ten day vacation. school. It had been in :progress .' a week . before 1 ar- rived. .At. 'vaclit ion' school'" the children': learned 'Bibli•cal;, stories, crafts, songs' • and games. There were • seventy children in:, , this school 'held in the basement of Little Britain United Churcoh. me pupils' were div'i'ded into :the following age grorips: ,kind-' ' ' ergarten, ' ' faun.. „to live • years; primary, six' to eight, . junior, nine to eleven '. and 'intermediate, twelve and. over., Everyone. en-' •joyed the program, particularly the- closing night. when they 'put on a ;concert and display for their .parents. On Sunday, July 24th,. the caravaiters— took — charge-ofthe ,church' service as the Minister was ,on• holidays John. We were entertained for. dinner and i supper , with different families giving us a good opportunity to get acquainted with home life in this .community. After so many wonderful' meals can you wonder we put en" weight. • • For our pleasure • we were' taken • for . a '..drive , along . ;the Trent Canal: We were. •fortunate enough to see the' ' locks work' both ways and the lift locks at Kirkfield operate, . All the car- avaners were ' impressed bythis massive structure. Another time ive• 'saw the largest lift, locks in the ' world at Peterborough. • ' This' place f ` will Always re- member for , its ' friendliness and hospitality. • From . Little, ' Britain,' John Brown. and I went to Kilmar, ' a mining 'area ; in Quebec: En route We had a three hour stop in Ot- tawa. This was very enjoyable as we , toured the Parliament Buildings and saw „ the changing of the guard. ' The splendour of the carvings in 'the stone • and wood of• the Parliament Build= sings Must beseen to be truly appreciated: Although .the Chang- ing of the guard .was a very irn- pressive .ceremony ' we •didn't envy the men in their .bear skin hats that hot.: day. • are ;produced by ,this huge' .equip - Ment. Another • night we went on -a hay ride and wiener roast with the Young People. This was good old fashioned fun at its best. Including mountain '' climbing,. swimming and boating, this sums up one .wonderful week in ' Quebec. . , On the: way 'to Thornhill we enjoyed another stop. at .Ottawa.
