THE :FREE PUBLICITY RACKET
Whether': or not all a ertising, medi-
urns are flooded with free publicity blurbs,
the weekly paper is, certainly 'on' the sucker„
list in the eyes• of some ..bre .companies.
What adds insult to injury is the , time'
it takes' to look" over .thestuff before -'con-
signing it to the waste paper basket, . which.
we can fill • . upon the

BERRY PICKING TIME
(By Dean Mac eod) '
Don't 'you remember a sum er day;
When in the morning we'd ie away
To the berry . patch in the shady -wood
Where the fruit was ripe &'the picking good?
• How clear the.. air and the: odours sweet
Of: wild 'things growing around our feet!
The wind • a whispering in the trees. •
` And the drowsy hum of :the busy bees.
The -birds, were singing; •a squirrel would run••'
From. limb to, limb in the morning sun.
And 'all . around was the healing 'balm
Of Nature so restful and sweet' and calm.,
The berries flaunted their riches red
The: canes in places grew overhead
Where, ' they fattened upon a rotting stuxrtp
(To 'a, foot unwary 'twould mean a' thump).
But riehes went' t the picker, wise
Who not too ; greedy would .use.. his eyes
And look the . bushes beneath as. well'
And pick each, ,berry, his hoard to swell.
Some tree was chosen to 'nark the : spots
Where the big pails nested, to hold •`the lot
As the tins were emptied when thither brought.
And somehow.. '`twat, counted a step , ahead
If someone had black berries mixed; with red,:
Row, time went . by and, how cares took flight,`
With "God in His heaven, the world all righty"
How welcome : a drink of clear Adam's ale'
•With • all this ''refreshing' no mind could fail .`
To take, up again all: the :claims of .life
The better to cope with• it's strainnor strife.
And there • would' .be raspberry pie for tea
And jars of fruit for for the` days to be:
Thank. you for corning down "Memory's lane,
To pick in' the ,wild' berry -Patch', again
