ON SUNDAY .OBSERVANCE
In thiseditorial column we publish
a. lay letter to, the editor , on the subject
•of Sunday observance. We feel the editor-
• ial column should be. open to, the expires
. sion of anyone's/ opinion, and not alone
• that of, the publisher.. ` •
We personally feel that in a rapidly
Changing world, it is inevitable that •cus-'
torns and traditions will also change, no
matter how commendable they are. The
Sunday activities which We now participate
• in. would shock our forbears. The ,corn-
meicialism of .these Activities is something
else again, and while still rejected by
public opinion in the smaller .centres, has
triade inroads in the cities and is gradually
• spreading. A still more open Sunday,
sportwise and in the entertainment field is
in the offing it seems, whether or not many
folk may not seek it.
• ... . • • • • •
WHY SUNDAY? '•
(Contributed).
Man 18 an intricate and -mysterious
triec amsrn and life is impossible without
'sleep and rest. But the bodyis but the •
casket which . contains the mystery and
•
treasure of the soul, and mind. °Sunday is
meant for: a rest and tonic from the round
of absorbing tasksand sports. It should be
yof worship and service which ele
ateasand purifies the 'whole life. Electri-
.
city can work wonders but it cannot light
the pathway to peace. Elevators can whisk
us to the top floor and aircraft take us
• ••,. to the heaiens but they cannot hft us near
God o satisfy, heart hunger for a fuller
knowledge of God. • • •
, •
Nobody can deny the value 'of exer-
cise for the body. but it can be .carried to
• •excess.' Archbishop Wm. Temple, once
said "People saywe must teach our young
people to play the game. But.they.-are not
playing the game. *Fresh air religion is a
selfish creed.' It founds no hospitals. It'
. builds. no orphanhomesIt leaves evil to
'increase without a protest.. Increased facili-
ties .for Sunday* amusement make money

WHAT'S . THE: FUTURE.?
R. •
. .
What is the future of the Lucknow
Business Men's. Association? This question
comes to mind after attending a• Meeting
last Friday /when • seven•business places
were .represented. At 'this meeting' the
Saturday' night Closing hour of 10 p.m.
-Was set. The resignation* was' received •of
President Clarence Greer who'has served
the, association. for two years, and no one .
was appointed to fill the. •vacancy.
What, will become 'of the Association
snow? , Nobody 'seerns.willing to accept the
position of president. Which is quite under-
standable in view of the lack of mtetest
, •and: do -operation •received. Only. a srnalt ,
group of business places are ever repre-
sented. at meetings and very few take. any
• • active Part in organization. Regardless of
what decisions are reached by the AssoCia-
: tion there . are always those who are re-
luctant to abide oby them.
Some business 'people spend much
time organizing and participating in the
promotion of everything under the sun ex-
cept their own business on an Association
baqis. When it comes to that their interest
appears to be nil and' they 4o. little or '
nothing to , try to • make \the. Association
the effective instrnmeritit could be.

We think this is sound thinking by the
Listowel Council.. Firecracker use in Luck -
now has long been a point of discussion
by citizen, old and young. Last year in
this • column we referred • to the tragic oc-
. .• curTaPces among • children that resulted
,• from the reckless use of firecrackers
throughout, ; the province. The matter was
discussed at the Business Men's meeting
,las't week' and has. been • discussed the Past
.• couple. of yOars, at meetings of • the Luck
now Fire Department. Both are in 'agree-
ment that .the preseiit reckless use of fir-
• crackers in the Village is ,a clanger' to per-
sonal safety as well, as being a great, fire
• hazard. • Firecrackers were responsible for
one minor fire last year in the : village and
the way they :are /exploded in alley -ways, •
doorways and behind buildings on , main• ,
street can eventually* 'only result 'in more
serious loss. • •• ••
We limit ourselves on Sunday to in-
• crease our value. As human beings. The
'greatest danger to our western world is
that we should forget. that ,character, self
control and discipline was the secret which
our forefathers gave to the 'world. Never
was there such a need and urgency that
our young people who are to be .the fu
lure leaders have a' sense of the necessity
of building character .and a:sense of duty,
to. God and .to their fellow men. We are '
told that the soul is dyed with the color
of it's leisure hours. This is an hour of
crisis. It is later than we think"Th. •
