MILK,' MARKETING
.COMES ' TO FORE
(By J. .Carl Hemingway)
Just a moment while I refer
back ' to a suggestion ' made 9 at.
the Wheat 'Producers annual
meeting to' the •effect • .that no
eastern Farm' • organization had:
made any objection to ,Govern
ment. about the' removal Tof. the
'reouirenient for Western •'feed
mills to purchase • all grains
through the Canadian. Grain
Board. .
'I ,would like to state that .the
Ontario • Federation of Agricul-
ture !reported t,ed to 'the members
mbers
meeting fJune. 3rd,
1960 that
• Oficial; protest .;against • this action
was presented . to the Federal
Governrnent from the O ;F.A.:
While it •• was ., unsuccessful in
:prevent•ingGovernment from in
troducing this action it no doubt
had .some . part . in having it res-
tricted to a one year trial -period:
Whether this• move . will , in
crease the production of ,livestock
in the West to any great: extent
remains •to be seen.' Apparently'
there Was. a certain amount of
grain finding its ;.way', to feed lots.
throughmachinery. dealers. and I
would 'suppose most farmers , who
'
were wanting to feed 'livestock:
were already ,doing. so..
What` will . definitely develop
will . be .'strong: competition; be
tween farmers ' .to °sellg rain
Whichever .•farmer will sell 'his
grain cheapest, will .be the one
who 'will'sell. This means'. that
his total income for the year may
be up a little but undoubtedly the
average income from'., grain mill
be down. This is a. hardship^ that.
most Western • farmers can ill of-:
'While the problems 'of hog,
marke'ting has been to the fore-
front for the'ast several years.
P
it now 'appears that the problem
of milk marketing .will now sup-
ply the .basis'for ControversyOne
ne
Of 'the recommendations of the
Milk Marketing •Corninittee which
caught .my eye was the'"freez
'ging" .of'present. milk quotas for
fluid Milk.`.By.so doing the Com
mitee pointed out that as fluid
sales increased :beyond the total'.

supply . of , quota milk;. 'Grade • A ■

milk . from • , the manufacturing ■
trade • would be. •diverted to the 1 •
fluid • market at fluid price. The. , _
gain ion•,this price Would then be " : i ■
returned equally to the prodUcers
of manufactu ing- milk. ,,
This no d ubt. 'in a. period' of, y ■
years could result . in' a consider... ;>;•r }'_ `. a
able increase in returns to these :.,f..,
'producers but it will not.. come
quickly. • It is also .:apparent that ■
the ', freezin of fluid . milk . r:<.>:::• Y :::,
