OTTAWA LETTER
Ottawa, Feb. 17th,, :0,61,
Dear Editor and Readers;,.
Another week has •gone by and
I am writing a few ,lines to inti-
mate in, my opinion, some of the
highlights that have takenplace
during the last week in', your
Parliament here in Ottawa.
As you. all know, the situation
in the Congo in Africa is .draw-
ing the attention of every nation,,
• On Thursday, the 16t1, Prime
Minis.ter. Diefenwbaker', issued a
statement to, ,the House, outlining
the problem.. I. would. like, to'
quote one praragraph he made iii-'
his statement:.
"In the fast :few days :the
Soviet aim has been'•the pur-
suance of its selfish ambition
• in central Africa and, in this
pursuit to : paralyze the Unit -
,ed Nations at '.a time when
a supreme effort is demanded
to prevent.further d.eteriora-
tion .in• • the crisis existing in
..the .Congo."
1 was very happy to see , that
President. Kennedy, in his 're
marks; did not show ,any sign of
down -backing . from the Russian
stand. 'In fact, he made ' it. very
•clear to Mr: Khrushchev that the,
United ,States will 'be. not bluffed:
It is to be hoped' that ways .encd•
means can be found 'at' the Unit
ed` Nations to bring. the warring
factions in the• Congo .together in.
such a way that. '• a .responsible
'government can be elected.
Another thingof interest' that:..
has transpired here in the House
of. Commons . was 'an • announce
nnerft hY the Minister .of Agri-
culture of a 1•arge, sale of .wheat ' to
Czeehoslovakia..This. sale amount
ed. to ' approximately ,seven mil
lion' 'bushels: 1 am sure• that sales
•.such as this and the one that was•
made tb China will .be bringing
down. the :large surplus• of'wheat
!that we :have been carryingover•,
from' year to' .year here` in Cana -
u.
It' has al•so':been ,announced—that.
Prime ,Minist MacMillan . of
Great Britain And. Lady Dorothy
a will visit Ottawa on April. 7'th ••&:
8th It is hoped • that Mr , Mac
Millan . will address a ; combined
me•ebtn•g: of, the i •ouse ' of Com
mons and . th:e Senate •while he i$
