WHY FARMERS LEAVE •
In the past two `decades there
has .been a heavy migration
of farriers from the land all
across. the North American con-
tinent. In Alberta the number
of farms, 'has dropped from.
close to 1100,000 in 1041 to a -
little =over 73,000 ,,at the time '
oof the last eensus in'. 11961. • In'.
viewof this big reduction in
farm.• numbers, a survey as to
why -,farmers leave the .land,.
conducted in Illinois,:; is of par-
titular"interest: In 1060 and 1961,
researchers:. questioned 21}0 farm-
ers who' were -.quitting farming.
• Onetlhird ' of them said ' the.
•financial, squeeze between' rig-
,
ing costs- and, declining prices
was ,the . most important reason
:why they had decided to: quit.
They were not making enough
mioney to meet expenses and.
family needs, the -return in cap-
ital ani' labor, was low or they
had the ability or training to
qualify, for higher. paying em- •
ployrnent.
Another 20' percent left be...
cause, of some problems.' relat-
ing

ing . -to. possessiion , of land. The
land had 'been :sold :or the 'lease
terminated, etc. ,
About • 26 were 615: -years old
and older• and .. had reached the.
age - at ' which they wanted' to
slow' ,.down or their -health re-.
quired it .
Another 11 percent . of those
under'':' 015 also "reported some
health ' problem .was . - the • main
reason, they were leaving,' . •
Family '. or other sociological
problems were •listed as theim
portant -reasons for another ' 10
percent. 'leaving..
Government price support op-
erations' prior to .their .departing
