THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO

The answer to the question of a full

dissipates, and the cost ;looms .large and
seemingly. unnecessary::
The ` Sentinel does not presume . to
suggest', what opinion you express ' in• re-
turning the questionnaire. But, the rate-
- payers have an. 'obligation to reply in
either the • affirmativeor the negative, to
help guide council >as. • to what' action will

The cost comes high,. but , broken

UNDERTOW UNSEEN . KILLER '
Undertow, the unseen _ and unsuspec-
ted ` killer, is . little known or understood
by many who frequent the •beaches. ' 'In
some resorts it is seldom ':experienced :to f
a dangerous degree while other shore lines
.are always :;dangerous because of ..'under -
`tow. ; But weather conditions can build up
a treacherous backwash' almost , anywhere.'
Undertow., can be suspected if .there
is a strong' on -shore wind, although it
may take two days of continuous blowing
be f .ore. the_sulx-surface,_swarl-becomes pow-
er u
ow-erful ::enough to be - dangerous. The action:
of waves piling up on a beach .creates a
• flow back into the lake. A . constant wind
will build up this' backwash progressively
for several days, and -after.'. 48 ;hours it
may be Jstrong enough -to sweep a 'bather
right "'off his feet.
