" Last Wednesday's vote in, Huron -Bruce riding will be one for the record. To • have an election end with. one vote separating the winner and the ' loser . is a rarity that I will likely never be seen again in this riding or even farther afield: • George 'McCutcheon of Brussels is, presently, unoffi- 'cially, the member of parliament for -Huron-Bruce; He' lost by a 709 majority in last; Fall's.' by-election. George came back eager , for battle again this Fall and by 'consistent hard workmanaged: to eke out a one -vote victory in last 'week's ballot. No doubt. ;the • tremendous popularity of John Roberts across, the province aided the McCutcheon campaign :eon siderably, but . the candidate's personal; 'effort and that . of his workers is. not to be minimized. On the other hand, Murray Gaunt of West Wawanosh was hit hard by the anti-Wintermeyer sentiment which 'was expressed right into the Liberal leader's "riding. Only Mur - ray's appeal and: record,' along with' his hard campaigning and ,the -help of r his 'workers, saved him from being snowed under' by the Conservative sweep. Noting the reduced maj- orities given his party stalwarts to the north of us, • it can be considered that :Gaunt held well in Huron -Bruce. ENGAGEMENTS M. and Mrs. Charles Read. of R.R. 5 Woodstock, swish to an- nounee :the engagement of their daughter, Pauline Evelyn, to Lorne (Melville Henry, son of Mr.. and Mrs: Melville Henry, R.R. 1 Kincardine. Lucknoviw, announce tthe, engagement of. their ' youngest daughter,,Patricia Lillian to Mr. Thomas Tayrlor, son`, of Mrs. Gordon Taylor of R.R. 2 Luck- now and .: ,the late'. , 1/1r. Taylor. The .wedding' will take place in Calvin United church St. Helens on Saturday, October' t12th, 163, With an armed service .vote yet • to come, the official count and the ' opportunity , to . have a recount still in the future, theoutcome of this . election is still ' "up in the air"'. for ' a few weeks yet. We "are., surethis must be the hardest part of the campaign for George and Murray. Regardless of ° the ::final; results, both George McCut cheon . and 'Murray Gaunt can consider themselves as - win ners. They ' conducted fine, straightforward campaigns minus the dirt thatso often crops. 'up in election campaigns.
