Lifetime Study
The explosion of medical know
ledge is so great that the grad-
uate :doctor of today has a "half
life" of 10 years .-- half . of what
he has Yearned will be ' obsolete
in a decade T Dr. W.. Victor
Johnston; of Toronto, said recent-
ly. Dr. Johnston was a Lucknow
practitioner Lor many years.
Dr. Johnston, 'executive director
of the College of General Practice
of Canada, was speaking on con -
led, in a discussion of the resolu-
tions coming before the Area Con-
vention.. Mrs. Morford Mackay
gave • an .excellent motto on "The
horizon never widens for forward
`looking people." Old .buttons and
jewellery • made interesting dis-
plays. Mrs. .Wm. Arnold toll
something of the trip she and her
husband had taken to the Wes -
1 tern, provinces. Some things that
had impressed her • were: the
lovely • road through the mountains
by the Rogers Pass, the beauty.
I of -the Okanagan Valley, newin-
' dustries of cement, . potash, and
,, huge developments of oil and
natural gas, bad weather is de-
, laying the harvest. Mrs. Victor
Emerson' • . and Mrs. Harvey Hou-
ston willbe in. Ripley on Novem-
ber •.9th to talk of their . trip to
Wolfeville, :'Nova Scotia. Lunch
was served by Mrs Gordon iMac-
tinuing medical education at the'
annual conference ;9f the Assoc
iatiofl of Medical . Colleges. of Cam
ada being held at the University
of Western Ontario.
About ,100 delegates --deans 'o#
the 13 Canadian medical; schools,
administrators. of teaching hospi-
tals, and two faculty representa-
tives" from each of the medical
schools—attended the conference,
Medical schools must teach stu-
dents
tudents to realize' .;that medicine is
a lifetime study and the doctor
:oust' continually keep abreast. of
' learning and be able to discard
' or "unlearn" what is obsolete or
in error, Dr, Johnston said.
"Learning is hard work and in
fact it is so demanding that many
doctors find it distasteful;" • he
said. "Probably , all 'lifetime study
programs' will have a high drop-
out rate."
About 60 to 70 per centof gen-
eral practitioners are interested
in post -graduate instruction, ah
though this: • does not meanthat
the remainder do not' bother to
seek new knowledge after grad-
uation, Dr.. Johnston said.
The college of general practice
was established in 1954. For nem
bership it requires doctors to show
proof of 100 hours of study .for
every two year of membership,
"All this instruction must be
,.accompanied by a' . determination
to simplify medicine 'for the • doe-
tors whose task it is to get the
maximum number of . people bef
ter, as. quickly as possible," . Dr.
Johnston said.
"Every major discovery 'should
make • general . practice :simpler."

Mrs. Peter Leeson. A compliment is the ' pause . that
