Mr, Don Thompson, •
The Lucknow Sentinel,
Dear Doh:
I have received your 'reply to my
enquiry regarding the beetles,
and on examining them find that
they confirm my suspicions, as
they are specimens of the Mexican
bean beetle, sometimes called the
bean lady beetle as they.are related
and similar in appearance to some
of our beneficial lady belles. They
are, ' howeveer, larger than most
of our • beneficial ' species.
The adult beetle of this pest Is
yellow to brown, with three rows
of spots across the back, number.;
ing 16 in all: It is about 1/4 inch
long, oval and quite. convex. The
female lays her eggs on the under-
surface of the'bean leaves. The.

larvae are orange ,coloured and
covered with branched ' spines
which give them a fuzzy appear-
ance. When full-grown, they are
about ½ of an inch long. Both
the adults and the larvae feed • on
the, 'undersurfaces of the leaves,
giving them a characteristic ragg-
ed, net -work appearande. The pest
spends the winter in the adult
• stage among leaves' and other deb-
ris on the ground.
• The Mexican bean beetle was
restricted to southwestern areas
of .the United States for almost a
century, but in 1920 it appeared
in Alabama. By. 1924, it had spread
northward to the, south shore of
Lake Erie and in 1927 %Alas found
at several points in southern Ont-
ario. During the next 15 to 20
years it spread throughout most
of southern Ontario but was a
spasmodic pest mainly • in, home
• gardens. In the early 1950's, how-
ever, it began to cause 'consider-
able damage to canning and field
beans, notably in. Lambton County
and on tbe north' shore of ,Lake
Ontario. Last year, infestations
were reported Jfrotn the Clinton
area and I expect it will continue

At Purina's Research Farm we're , able to take good "grade" calves '
and grow them big enough and fast enough that they freshen at 20
Cad you have the same results on -Purina? That depends on how well
you manage your herd. Thousands of Canadian dairymen ARE getting
these good results by following Purina's Calf Program which stresses:
good breeding, sound management, careful sanitation and good feeding. •,
.Canadian dairymen are finding they °get calves that freshen easily and • •
healthfully before they're two years old and this early freshening
means an average of up to 3,000 pounds Milk per heifer before slow- •
developing, heifers even get into the milking string.
Science proves that calves between birth and breeding age .will grow
7 tithes faster per pound of feed,,, than they do after they're bred.
Purina Calf Startend is scientifically developed to capitalize on • your
calves early, urge -to -grow . . to help, them become big heifers, fast!
