Now what to, tell • you 'today.
We. are parked .beside the -.fence.
of the Pavilion Gardens, just a
few feet from ,a. delightful . little
waterfall on the: infant river Wye,
The river first appears in Poole's
Cavern where it issues from the
limestone rock, flows . out '.through
private 'gardens and these lovely
public gardens and then goes un-
derground, I find that many Brit-
ish rivers have a curious way of
going, underground. In this case,.
a number . of very, large . buildings
'are on top of the river. Some dis-
tance 'away, it emerges behind
the stores, adds .greatly to the
beauty of another park at the end
of the main street, where two other
little streams join it; . And • then
away it goes through, a • beautiful
dale -sometimes called the Dale
of the Four R's, road, river, rail-
way and rock • all running, parallel:
for a •few miles. •
We have 'chosen this particular.
parking spot for 'numerous rea-
sons.' One,of course is the beauty
of the gardens. • Then, ' it is across
the street from a Hotel 'which was
once the Buxton ' home ' of the.
Earl of Shrewsbury. He was in
charge of Mary, Queen :of Scots

I suppose a Festival of Music
means a feast of music and that
is just what we have had, with
greatly varied , fare.. We came. to
Buxton for the Festival primarily
because . the Halle Orchestra of
Manchester conducted by Sir John
Barbirolli wasthe main attraction.
They., gave three ..concerts,,. one
a11 -Beethoven, one ; of Viennese
music and the third by composers
who 'lived during the past century.
I ' enjoyed all the .concerts very
much: Generally speaking, "• the
mucic was light 'and pleasant` and:
tuneful. In other 'words, easy to'
take : even 'for people who are not
too interested in: music.

Sunday afternoon with a service
in, the Parish Church of St. '. John
the. Baptist - an appropriate ded-
ication . when one remembers that
the fame of Buxton is founded on
its springs and wells. There were
morning recitals in The Pump
Room. That is the building where
the nobility and gentry 'took the
waters" back in Regency 'Days. It
is a charming place .and. I am sure.
there: must be ghosts of ladies and
gentlemen of the old days still
lurking 'around. Two of the.morning
concerts were by first desk players
of the Halle; Orchestra. One was
a Brass. Consort of five players and
the other a . Woodwind Elisemble.
1 enjoyed both concerts . very
much, even the somewhat harsh
modern harmonies ": but I . did find
the Brass 'group rather too loud
in the small room. •
However, the three most plea-
sant mornings were •. when the
String .Quartet played. For ' one
thing, . it seemed to fit in .,the Pump
Room as many of their pieceswere
composed when Buxton was a
fashionable.. watering place ' and
some of them may even have been
played ; here in those days. Then
I am fond of the delicacy of much
string quartet music which, I
think, is at ' its best in the intimate
atmosphere of'a small the,
But
most important, I • enjoyed it be-
cause of the real • ability of the
players and their friendly and gen-
ial personalities.
The players call themselves the
Alberni String • Quartet: The 'pro-
grams
.pro -grams said the first violinist was
born in Canada. When. the first con
