THE LUCKNOW .SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, 'ONTARIO PAGE FMB .Describes Blessing and Dressing "The VVeIIs ' Celebration • Dear Little, Mice --- • Now ,what to tell you today? Really, I know, or I wouldn't be writing to, you. I have Seen . so many children here that • it ' is natural; to write to you, HERE. is Buxton, a very interesting town in the Derbyshire. Hills, in the Derbyshire' National Park in the middle `of England or near it. At' this ' moment, I am sitting in an old sandstone quarry. . I expect you think that is a queer place to be but actually it is quite pret- ty and certainly very different from most camping sites, I am looking straight at the old quarry wall, probably 75 feet high. The sandstone . 'is . all ' in layers;' and the Mayers, are luitc level here. • At the" lower Part, the layers are very thick and , nassirz .and look very solid -- which they 'are. As your eyes go up, the layers (or strata) are thinner and look a bit crumbly, and get more crum- bly nearer• the top; The last few feet at the very top are not rock at all, but loose sand or clay or something. The whole bank is a lovely dull reddish -brown col- our: (Mostof the hduses. on . this road are ' built of this stone.) It has been abandoned -long enough that grass •and buttercups and even. small trees are growing in. the crannies. There is grass. along the edge at the top and a dry stone ,' wall also. The sky is ' ,a glorious blue today- very clean after being washed most of yes- terday — and there are small filmy white clouds floating by. There is a pool, fountain, tiny PAID ARANTEED TRUST CERTIFICATES • :issuer in amounts . from $100 upwards for 3, 4 or 5: years. • • earn': the above indicated: interest, payable half -yearly by cheque. • . authorized investment . for all. So you see, it may sound a queer place, but it is really a very pretty place to camp, There are. 1.9 permanent caravans or trailers here, and three transients. , Now, . a. bit .about Buxton. First• of all, it has. mineral. springs, The water is' quite warm . but has al- most' no .mineral flavour. We are 1000 feet above sea level with quite high hills all around, They call this lower part ,theBuxton Basin."The springs were known nearly. 2000 years ago when the Romans were in Britain. They loved hot mineral baths and ; there are still bits • of the old. Roman bath houses to be found. After the Romans left, all this part of the country became a Royal hunting forest. In winter the deer —' bucks and does -- gathered . in the warm basin and that is where the name and • coat of arms come .from " — • bucks, Buxton In the time of Queen.. Elizabeth, most of the valley was owned by the •Earl of ' Shrewsbury. His : house is now A hotel. Nobility' used to 'come to Buxtonevery year to be healed of various diseases.2 ` The spring became known . as St. Ann's Well because St. Ann was the patron saint of cripples. Later still, the Duke of Devonshire got the land • and Buxton really began to boom. Lovely big stone houses, hotels and hospitals were built. A 'visit. to :Buxton to 'take the .:.waters' either to drink or bathe in Was 'the • thing to do.' A ' later Duke of Devonshire was Governor`Gen- eral of . Canada. • Now, it is ': a holiday resort and most Of the,. baths • have become , swim ming pools. But the :biggest `; hospital is' now a National Health Hospital and Orthopedic Clinic. We -have seen many : wheel 'chairpatients around the. town. ' In • ancient . Roman days : there was a great Fontonalia or Foun- tain : Feast when food and drink 'were offered to the god Fons or Fontus.:..(That is where .we get our word fountain.) Garlands of flowers were placed around the: •spring and a religious ceremony was held. This week has . been Wells Dressing_ Week ': in - Buxton. Two mineral springs in the town have been; `dressed' and look . very pretty., A large.framework is made .and covered • with, wet clay.
