On Saturday, July llth, around
noon hour, Graham Cook, a Rip-
ley contractor, arrived in Kintail
with a. float truck,.,Re proceeded
immediately to .load a piece Of
kiis equipment, .a farni tractor
equiPped with a front end shovel.
He had left it .here a 'Week be -
fere for tire repairs. ' -
"Would you do a small job. •for
me?" I inquired, • arriving on the.
scene,. •• •
"What ''did you have in mind?"
Graham wanted to know.
I'd. like to .have this -septic-tank
drain filled; 'it shouldn't .take very
lOng." • ,
Graham; looked at his watch
then studied the job -site for a
few , seconds. (no doubt •he was
1,vondering,•:if he •could spare this
timefrom his busy schedule).
Realizing that the profit from this
,operation would be small, the con
tractor, to oblige,, agreed to do
the M. Without delay, he' swung
the, tractor into :position and set
about filling in the ditch.
A' few yards ahead of . him, • sat
our Ford tractor with spring -tooth-
ed cultivator attached. This equip-

ment we used ,spasm_adically for
ripping out weeds in our vacant
lot. Before the ditch -filling could
be completedi this machinery had
to be moved.
I replaced our tractor's missing"
battery with one 1 borrowed from
the garage. When this measure
failed to get a %grunt from the
engine, I put the blame on the
battery.. 'Graham, who by now —
was standing by waiting for me.
to move it, thought differently.
"Let's clean these battery ter-
minals, they look prettydirty,"
•he ,said. •• ' •
Sure •enough, the -battery re-
sponded to 'this treatment by tur-
ning over the motor at a . lively
rate — still no life from 'it though.
"Is the gas turned on?" Gra-
ham .inquired.
"Oh yes, it must be!" I assur-
ed him. • •
,
In 'answer to this 'reinark, he
reached over to a valve on the
fuel -line ;• I watched dumbly as he
turned it counter -clockwise there-
by allowing, the gas to reach the.
carburetor, With evident mechan-
ical Graham coaxed , the
tired old. engine to start,. I quick-
ly moved Our equipment .out of
hi, ',road. •' • • •
Graham, resumed his levelling
operation. A minute later, the
motor in his. tractor, coughed,
sputtered' and stopped.. 'Out ef
gas' was his explanation. He rem-
,edied this situation by .Siphoning.
'some gas from 'the tank on his
•float and' transferring it to the
tractor •tank. t •
Thereafter, the job proceeded'
smoOthly. .until the last shovel-
ful: While 'manouvering for vthat
last load, .Grahani was preparing,
to reverse his tractor, when some-
thing prevented :this action. The
reverse gear in 'his transmission
would not function., Despite his
• persistent., efforts to change them,
the gears were blocked . pos-
sibly, by a: small piece .0 loose
metal, in Graham's on.
What does a contrac r do when
faced •with the breakdown of a
..piece of his' equipment? Console
himself by. fluently. 'cursing the
• manufacturer or salesman, • who
made or sold it?, •
Not Graham. Stoically he ac-
cepted the truth that the trans-
mission was about ready :to., 'go'
anyway; if it hadn't broke down
,here, it would have occurred at
the next job -site perhaps under

Still optimistic, he observed that
one, znachine — ours — was still
operative. This one; we put to
