Dear
• Now, what shall I tell you to-
day? Again,. it is not very dif-
ficult to decide. We have been
. back in, Manchester almost a
week, and it has been, quite 'un
• eventful, 'except for. the • bundle
. of letters and papers ' from Can.
oda. And: do we ever love to get
them! Unegentf ul, until last night,
which was .really our reason for
coming • back just• :now,
Years ago, I read a book about
Lancashire people and one chap-.
ter was about how they love "a
reet good do;" • Well 'last night
was ` a reet good do" and ' until
you, have experienced a • Lanca-
shire. "reet good do," you have
only a vague idea of how much
' by a former member of Parlia-
ment. The rooms are very ,large
and the lawns and gardens have•
been very lovely when gardeners
were available and someone was
interested • in keeping them up.
They are still .nice but a bit out
of 'control.. Thecaretaker of the
building set up the tables and
got out the dishes,and cutlery.
The rest was left fothe. women
of the family. In this ,family, a
party begins • with • tea about five
o'clock; dancing urtil'nine, supper,'.
then more dancing until, nearly.
midnight.
My part of the. party was small,
and quite•. unimportant, but I had'.
fen: .doing it; I decorated the ta-
&
hies with candles and flowers. 'I
• zest ' a faintly can.. y

stone. A birthday is ,, always worth
celebrating, be it first, twenty-
first or ninety-first. This was none
of these!'
Plans have. been going op for
weeks. A h'al1 • was hired, a band
'engaged and menus discussed; A
bit later, menus . 'were • written
down and invitations sent out.. AP -
proximately fifty : were invited
chiefly family and' in-laws — and
forty-five guests 'accepted. " The
ed flower, • h do not • remember.
'The. birthday cake was decorated
in blue ' and white and had . roses,
and :.a. maple leaf in defence . to
us Canadians at the party. •
If you are, like: me, you will
be interested in .the food. Plates:
were arranged with lettuce tom-
atoes, (pronounced • tomawtoes )
hardboiled egg, cold ham and
cold tongue. ; Boy !'• Did they ever
look good? Those of you who
know my capacity for .'food will
cake . ..was ;' ordered with appro.: appreciate how ''they . appealed to
priate' • decorations. This week, :me! Then up and . down the tables
things really got 'into high gear. were plates of buttered brownand
Various members of the family white bread,. clear pickles, mus-'
tard pickles, beet root (really
beet pickles) potato salad, tossed
green,: salad; salad.cream (dress-
ing) ,. salt and: pepper' etc:. At . each
place there Was a .dish of fruit,
in this case a fruit jello decors -

vide certain food. And. what ,food!
Then yesterday was. the Big Day.
The partywas held in a•.sort. of
Community. Hall. At one ,.time...`it
was a large, .private • home,. owned
