WEDNESDAY, JULY 1.5th, 1964..
A major expenditure must be ,
undertaken --' an
d, soon ,at the
local arena. There are., two
ternatives to be decided upon by;
theratepayers of the Village, and
with a.; view • to eliminate the cost
of a plebiscite, a ' questionnaire
is being.; drafted. This will explain.
the projects and the, comparative
costs, and'' will be presented per-'
sonally to each ratepayer by rep-
resentatives of •various. 'organiza-
:tions in 'this. community.' . I
' A meeting of. representatives of
these organizations - Lions, Le.
gion, • Arena Committee, and -'the'
Council, • was held 'recently and
the personal approach` method de- i
cided on.
At the July' meeting of the Vil-;
lege Council,. Reeve G. W. Joynt
.presented. ,•comparative . figures, of
the' cost • of the ; two projects,
with the decision resting with the •
ratepayers of the Village.
f
.These two :proposals have been
outlined and will be presented as
concisely as possibly. to the rate-•
payers in a printed folder. On.
the basis • of information • submit-
ted,' The Sentinel has drafted this
information. bulletin, which when
finally . approved, will be. circula-
•
ted personally for a "yes" or
"no" signature. .
y Proposal • No. ' 1
Proposal,, •No. ,1 is to build a
new and modern addition ,at .the,
•west end of the arena, and to.
remodel,. renovate ;and paint the
•present arena building; The cir-
cular will give specific : benefits ,
of this.undertaking, which ••will
have 'four sources of Provincial
and Federal grants ` available.
The maximum cost to the .mun-
icipality is 'estimated at $35,000,
which debentured at: 20 ' years ''• at
51/2% represents nts. in round figures
$2,900 per annum.. It' is predicted
that the ` year-round operation • of
the new structure which, will pro-.
vide facilities for more than '.just
winter • activities, will amount .to.
about . $1,400, leaving a balance
-of $1,530, representing 1.1✓2 mills;.
or $1.50 per $1,000: of assessment.
The operating deficit .of the
arena before ` artificial ice was
installed cost the ' ratepayers of
the Village $1,000 and more per
annum. •
The two seasons that • artificial
ice has operated there have been
small surpluses and based on
this . it ; is expected that a modern
new 'structure would . make it ; pos-
•siblle to stage numerous profit-
making.
rof it -making• activities during t h e

spring, summer and fall,
The • Other Alternative
Proposal No. 2,.. which is the
other: alternative '— ;and must be
undertaken , immediately . if the
new addition is rejected — . calls
for, interior'' and' exterior. painting, -
repairs and renovating of the
present facilities: and dressing
room , accomodation, which . have
deterAiorated badly.
Grants under the. 'Community
Halls • Act, and Centennial pro-
gram, are not • available 'for • this.
work, '•'and' it is estimated that
the minimum ' cost to' the rate-
payers of the work which • must
be done, would be '$10,00(1. This
debentured for ten years at- 5Y2%,
would • amount to annual payments.
of, .$1,326, comparable ' over a ten
