LETTER TO THE 'EDITOR,,
•Commends Degree
Accomplishments
In education
Dear Campbell
The 'picture, and brief write-up
on, Mac McDonald receiving his:•
Doctorate degree : moves me to
comment on the remarkable feat.
that this young man and others
from Lucknow 'have. accomplished.
..To .earnand: receive a :' Ph.D. is .
an accomplishment made by. : so
few of our .University: bound stu-
dents' .that it is an event we
should not pass over too lightly. '
This degree means,' firstly that.
the. -person has *Studied for -4 years
in University and earned - a ;Bach=
elor's degree in . his chosen field.
The next step is a Master's. de-
gree. which • requires from 1 to . 2
years of study and also original
research written into a thesis. The
final step ' is the Pii,D, which re-
quires further years of ` study,
teaching and ':some highly :percep-
tive ' research ending in a. publish-
ed
thesis. To be accepted this.
thesis must :add worthwhile new
knowledge • and research. data for
•the whole scientific world in the •
.particular area of specialization.
A person who has earned a'
Ph.D. from a recognized Univer-
sity. has' 'developed a self discipline
and • a sense: of purpose that is
indeed a tribute to that person.
In terms of intelligence and a
sacrifice to years of hard work,
the many other directions of life
demand just as much, and so the
person who is a success in what
eyerhis chosen work happens to. '{
be is. a .credit~ to himself,' his
family, and his comm ty
wi
But we just have to givehave-to-give-a-spc 1
nal word of .praise •to. the other
"Macks" of • our area =- in par-
ticular Alex 1VMlntyre and 'Helen,
'Salkeld for in their, world, so
far .from ours, they have gained
an eminence, and are making Con-
tributions of ` which'although the
rest of us are not a - part' of and .
perhaps cannot even' comprehend,
we are, immensely proud.
