fir John A. MacDonald Never Slept
Here, Was Stopped By Snow Storm
Although a bedroom 'suite was Herb Graham's letter on the sub
nli hte in
built especially' for Sir John A. lect is interesting & e , g n g,
It is asfollows:
.
MacDonald by a Lucknow artisan I...Dear Campbell: many, many years age, Sir John P
A. never slept herd', so we, are told:
• A snowstorm blocked his train and
so prevented . the ' "Father of Con-
federation" from campaigning in
Lucknow, where he was to have
been the overnight guest of the late'
Mr, and Mrs.. -Robert Graham',
The . late Mr. Graham was an. ar-
dent Conservative, and with a flare
for writing became known as the
poet' laureate of Lucknow. He
wrote a volume of very interesting
poems. For . many years he was
the local , librarian.
•But back to Sir • John A. Mac-
Donald. A recent issue of the Tor-
onto Globe and Mail featured an
article on "Houses Touched By,
History" and referred .to a Sher
bourne: St. house in Toronto, 399,
r.. where Sir ' John A... stayed during
his. Toronto • visits: Illustrated in
the : article ' was a three-piece bed-
room suite made in Lucknow for
Sir John A. in 1865, so• the article
says.
Herb Graham of Toronto, sone of
the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gra-
ham, has filled us in on some of
the details. , He says the suite'. was
either built 'by.. A. T. , Davidson,
father of the 'late Wm.'J. David
1 son, or by a Mr, Miller.
Lack of definite informs ori as
to :•the year of Sir 'John A. Macy
Donald's intended visit to Lucknow;
makesit. impossible to ; pinpoint
who made it. If made in 1865, it
was before . Mr. Davidson came to
Lucknow. He died ' in ' October, 1913,
and his obituary recounts that he
came to, Lucknow in 1872' to open
a furniture and undertaking bus-

The Davidson : home was for many
years theresidence' now owned by
