TALK OVER OLD TIMES—Mayor
David D. Hay, right, enjoys visit
with . J. E. "Ted" Smith, former;
Listowel Public . School principal.
Now ' assistant superintendent of
Professional Development with the
'''Department' of Education in .Tor-
onto, Mr. Smith is, author of three
text ' books on new mathematics
course..
Mr. Smith was at Exeter.fol-
lowing the Listowel visit, where
the new mathematics course was
-explained at a workshop for dis-
trict teachers. •

new approach The children are
guided into . ° exploration of . the.
number system. ; to find out for
themselves how. it works.
He's . enthusiastic about the sys-
tem. "We haven't heard of any
place where this new'• method has
been adopted where ' they didn't
like :it," he said, "We . findthe
children a great deal more inter-
ested. One. important aspect is
that .it creates a completely. dif-
ferent
attitude in the classroom."
The departmental - official de-
scribed the method as an attempt
to ' provide a ,"better mathemat
ical basis" for elementary:.. school
children.
It ' involes precision in terms , and
procedures, 'a . great deal of em-
phasis on„using; different "names”
for the.. same number, the use of
"number sentences to. solve . `prob-.
lems•`and a greater stress on the
nature of the : number system by
'taking •advantage of its decimal.
nature. '
Two other aspects which will
be "stressed a great , deal in the
program" are mental`. arithmetic.
and estimating.
"The whole program is an at-
tempt to make 'mathematics more
meaningful," Smith told the tea-
chers.
"I' know some of you . think ; this
is utter nonsense, ' but yoti will be
teaching it -in two years whether•
you like it or not." He ; explained
dater that a 'large . proportion of
schools;. will be using; the: new
method in September.
Aware of some criticism of the
new program, 'Smith said it has.
centred around the fear that it
will .evolve . too much for the
children•, to learn. His answer is
that "it involves no more :matt}
erratics than was on the curric-
ulum . before— it's just a different
approach."
