THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW, ONTARIO
Need For 'Businessmen. Assoiation
There is an urgent need for an active.
and cd -operative . Business„ Men's Associ-
ation in Lucknow which has died a natural.
death as an organized.' group, . chiefly as a
result of failure to agree on retail business
hours and their observance.
For how m
long merchants erchants can get along
without such ' an .organisation and without
adversely affecting the general business wel-
fare of thevillage is .a mute question.
The question of retail hours is by no
.deans an ' unusual situation. Almostevery
town and . village _leas' thesame problem,
which eventually must be resolved : or : it
destroys , such Associations; which offer
great potential, in promoting the interests
of any community, and which . could ' and,
should °be one of the village's; most influ-
ential and active. groups.
The side issue of business , hours ,hns
reduced the local association to a leaderless
organization and . little wonder.
Apart fromrits more far-reaching po-
tential, the need for such an Association
was apparent' this week when the question
arose ';regarding business. hours preceding
and following the Good Friday holiday, as
well, as resumption of the weekly open
night.:, ..
Confusion, .in such 'matters is, bluntly,
not good for business and a discourtesy to
Good

sblwishful'thi
._ siness Men's. Association.king to say we
need a Business as:. things..
stand. The only way that an effective,.., en:-
ergetic :. • group can function, is in a spirit
of co-operation that submerges one's per-
somal,. opinions,. and preferences, and finds
support for ,what is for .the . general good'
ofthe community..
That Lucknow is, a . good place to
shop is ' evidenced., in various • ways: Mer-
chants
have `modernized their stores 'and.
kept pace with modern merchandising„
methods, but all this will be offset, to a cone'
siderable ' ..degree, without co-operation . .
which recognizes that one merchant ' is
good for: the other:, As we have said be-
fore, it ' is our opinion that one's chief
opposition is not :. "down the ; street"
'or ':across the road". It's ' in .neighboring.
towns and not -so -far distant cities which
are constantly- .trying , to . entice those con-
sumer dollars.
Lucknow merchants best defense
against this, is a co-operative energetic
program of friendly service and' consistent
advertising to constantly reassure the resi-
dents of this area that there is no better
place in which, toshop than the , Sepoy
Town.
dor. The` Community
A winter skating carnival in Lucknow
has never . 'lacked for enthusiasm by the
younger set whd just automatically make
it, a success. Last Friday's ': carnival : was a
fine example of how . simple, family', type
entertainment can make for an enjoyable
evening" by young and old: It''presents an
opportunity for mom, dad and the kids
to:. be part of the same social : e'vent, and
lets'' other friends` and- relatives be part' of
that association too.
The people ofthe community and their
children by their participation made . this
evening a tremendous success along with
the Lucknow Lions Club and their workers,
This typeof gathering is good for a co=in •
munity. This is ."what .helps' make a com-
munity unified and friendly.
On Thursday of this week 'the Luck-:
now : Agricultural Society : are :presenting. a
variety concert styled on a "local talent"
basis and patterned after the 12 ' months .of
the year. This also should be a pleasing
family -type evening that will bring together
all age groups in the rural and urban area.
The Agricultural Society, will ' observe their
centennial next year and this variety even-
ing is part of an ;effort to raise .funds : for
the ,centennial '.observance.
We are glad that there. are 'still •as-
sociations and willing workers that will Or
ganize -"community !type ', homey, enjoy-
able .: entertainment such as : this which
moulds urban and rural people' together:
P.
It : makes 'for good community' ,spirit.
