Insurance Meeting
• (Continued: ,from page, 14
unanimously in favour of the
company hiring an inspector with
the matter left in the hands of
the directorsof the company, Mr.
Smyth stated that . the company
had held off in this matter as an
economy move, because' of early
year' heavy losses by the group.
He said, ; "this may or ' may not
-be economy, one large fire saved
would mere than pay, for the . in-
spector." Mr. Smyth, stated that
he would like to, seen an .inspector
appointed and felt it might save
them a lot of money. ,
Considerable discussion centred
around the wiring aspect of- caus-
ing fires and although it was
.agreed that poor wiring is a haz-
zard, it was felt that fires,, ,of
unknowncauses too often a r e
blamed on wiring with no actual
proof . to this effect.
Approve Floater Endorsement
On a motion by Harvey Houston
and Gordon Smyth a• resolution
was approved in regard to writing
a floater endorsement for theft
floater
and. physical : damage. to ' livestock
arid . farm machinery. While this
type of, insurance. is not. presently
in high demand, the company wish
to be able tolook after ' those
seeking it in the future.':
Pay Fire Costs u
Gordon Smyth, a ' member of
the West .'Wawanosh Township
council, ; suggested to • the . meeting
that .the insurance company con-
sider
on-'
sider paying a portion of the cost
within' the p
of fire;cells townships.
/Gordon felt that the . municipality
was absorbing all 'the fire protec-
tion costs and in many cases "sav-
ing the insurance company mon-
ey."
This matter has been discussed
at previous : meetings of the in-
surance company and. considerable
discussion centred ` around this teat
ter again Friday. •
.The 'Smyth proposal did not win
too; much ' support although many.
agreed. . that the townships were
working for the ' insurance com-
panys in many cases where fire
damage was reduced considerab-
ly beeause
onsiderab-lybecause of the presence of the
Fire Department. .
It was. generally agreed by most
speakers that the •.'responsibility
of. providing fire : protection :falls.
on the municipality and that ur-
ban residents pay for .it in ' their
taxes, . likewise rural . residents
should also.. If an . insurance comp
pang' paid a portion of rural fire
calls, likewise it would be required
to. ' pay urban calls also which
could become complicated.
The original intent of most rur-
al municipalities was ..that the
property owner pay the'• expense
of ' a ' fire • call, but when a few
refused to do , this because . of
calities (e.g, my . neighbour
ed in the call, not me) the
responsibility came . to, rest onthe
Municipalitywho now must ' guar--
antee , the fire department their
money. '
Secretary-treas. that Frame Thomp-
sonport one ' company:
providere' fire truck ` coverage for
an additional premquni ' on .their
insurance.
Cecil Blake felt that with urban
residents paying fire costs in their
taxes, rural residents hada right
to do so to. He said that, because
Ashfield a n d West Wawanosh
Townships have no ' capital expen-
diture in fire equipment, they are
payingthrough the ,nose for their
