My , wife and I had another anniversary this week,, and, ' as usual, neither of us re- membered it until three :days af- ter it was past, too late to cele- brate. brate. , . The reason I` admire the anni- versary addicts is the sheer bold- ness of their tactics. Usually, they. are, about the rottenest'. husbands intown, on a day-to-day basis. :But `'with one florid, extravagant gesture,; they wipe out. all : their 2`.'. s .and .. the las . 5ln$. ofa t 1 month lay the : groundwork for another year of getting away with mur- der. Few of these . birds • are the gen- tle, meek, timid, '.humble,: h e pecked' ;: husbands this era has spawned, like` you and me. Not they. Among their ranks you find the deer hunters, the fishermen, the hard drinkers, the poker. play- ers, the philanderers. And yet, . with a combination of .,..utter offr. nte y; andjncredible craftiness, they carry it off every year, A big bash of candy, a flou- rish of -flowers, ' dinner a n .d :. a night on the : town; and the old ladyy falls for it every time. This is the ; part I can't under,' stand. Women, . especially women who have been married fora' few years, a r e not notoriously soft- headed. And e t these women; who knowf ectl well that the l Y .:. old man is a two-timing heel, an incipent' lush, or a big -mouthed bum, go all weak at the knees when. Joe' waltzes in: on their ;an- niversary' .'with a ' potted plant. I'm not • making this Up. Let's take my pal Charlie as an : ex- ample. He's real. I'll change no- thing' but the na`mes..
