pilot 'informed us as we flew over
a mining camp, lumber camp
and two Indian. villages:— "Land
sdowl House" 'and "Webequiet"'
,When we landed on the Winisk
River at 2:45 p.m. ' we were 240
Miles • from N:akina' and, 18 miles
from the' nearest Indian village

At this Point we were told the
purpose of our ' adventure • camp
we . were to clear. campsites
for • prospective tourists. The De-
partment of •Lands a n d Forest
had allotted $10,000 to . this pro-
ject for, scouts ' there had been
two previous camps . and one to
follow .of scouts and leaders from:
Ontario: Included' :in . our.' party
were 6 scouts, • 3. ' 'overs,3 lead-
ers and 4 Indian. guides.

Were chosen for a ,two week "ad-
venture
adventure camp at, Lake ,Winisk in
Northern Ontario from July,• 25th'
to August loth: •_ ;
We: were met. at Barrie ' on July
25th ,at the :CNR' station by Dis-
trict, Commissioner John Watkins
wbo supplied, us with our tickets.
-One boy, from Barrie and two In-
dian boyss from Cape Croker join-
ed our group at this time, After
'. boarding t. h. e • train, the Rovers
charged their way down toward
us to give, 'us. our meal tickets
Which were to satisfy ' us while
we . were on the train.
Some of the places we passed
*hroiigh were Parry . Sound, Sud-
ury,:. Capreol, Folet, Longlac : and
1Hornpayne.. To pass the time on
the train some of the boys who
bad guitars played : until thewee
hours . of the morning while ` oth -•
-ers tried to get some sleep: , As
a, result, little sleep was' had by
anyone. Excitement . was, . starting
to build up : When we arrived in
Nakina: on Monday . morning. at
11:15 a.m. • ,
A truck. from . ";Austin. Airways"
awaited your •arrival and deliver-
ed us to . the two planes at 'a lit
: tie lake two ' miles- from Nakina.
The planes, a .'"Norseman" and
a "Beaver" loaded up and teff
While we .,were getting . settled
the guides prepared a delicious
supper. Examples, of the food we
enjoyed ` were- beef. steaks, pork
chops, potatoes, 'corn, peas, atraw-'
berries •a nd raspberries which
were dried — to : prepare , add
water, . and then • cook. .

fishing — pike and ' pickerel were
the ;;main fish caught • but some
3.'and ' 4 pound speckle .trout, were
hooked . in the fast moving rapids:
One scout: from Thornhill hooked
a pike .weighing: '17 , pounds'. and
measured 39 inches in length , with
at 12:00 in a due North direction the help of Y Doug Valle. 'was

paradise. The guides demonstra.
ted how to fillet' fish which was
done very quickly and , made a:
clean 'job. / •
The work that we did consisted'
of making tables out : of ' . black:'
spruce, poles and using spruce
roots to lash the poles : together..

long: or strenuous as . we • worked
until . 2:30 and after thatour time
was free ,to' do as we pleased;
Most ,of the free . time Was taken
up by• fishing, swimming or rest-
ing. ' •
We ' had. about. two days. rain
during our stay.while the remain-
der 'of . the weather ,was sunny
and • warns.. .
The-onlY accidents' were of a.
minor nature that ' of cut fingers •
and' on'e: of the' leaders getting a
fish hook 'caught in his finger.
The guides, made several. trips
to Webequie to get fresh supplies
which took 9 hours round trip. It
was interesting to note prices of
sortie.' of, the supplies we used —
bread' .(from B.C.) 55c a loaf; :but-
ter .93c. ,a' pound.. Since these sup-
plies ' must be ' flown ,.,, in we can
understand. .the expense , involved
in these ' trips.. • •
We enjoyed our two :weeks' of
adventure in this isolated and 'vir-
gin
i r -gin area. I feel within' • a ; few'
years •many `' sportsmen will soon
enjoy t h e fabulous fishing : and
hunting opportunities here. I would
say to any scout who :may have:
the :' c'hance to. attend one of • •these.
adventure , camps to •'do so.
