' Plan ,Day Horse Enthusiasts On Civic Holiday, Monday, Aug- ust 2, Kincardine Kinsmen •:Club will be presenting their twenty. second annual harness race meet. • The. Kinsmen ,Club of Kincar- dine ,was the first service club in Canada to• sponsor the •sport. Harness racing has advanced a , long way since it first? started ill• Kincardine ninety-seven years.a .; go when • the 'first races were ar=, ranged between the "young bloods" of the district whose rep- utation at that time might be likened tel today's 'fast cars. : However, there was- a differen- ce and devoted horseman took pride in the advancement of the breed. Unfortunately this ., called for .personalsacrifice so it was not surprising that racing as an organization sport fell on evil days and, it would appear for a timethat harness , racing would disappear •from the : Canadian sports picture. ,A few of the old- sters still felt the terrific : com- petitive spirit and enlisted young- er groups "with the legs to help bring about a revival, since many race, meets fell to the responsibil- ity esponsibil ity of a few, who through lack of helpers 'and, finances, found suc- cessful race meetsan impossibil- ity. This happened in Kincardine al- though lthough the ' town had one of 'the best ; tracks in Ontario. Kincar•- dine Kinsmen took up the chatl lenge which has been ddopted by many western Ontario centres and once again 'harness racing be- came. one of the : greatest annual events in the Lake Huron town's summer program. Last .year ' 76 Kinsmen and . stn-' po ters, made the harness race meet one that • isrespected by not only .those :who attend but by the horsemen as well. On the other hand the support given. the Kins- men bythose Who wish ' 'to: race in Kincardine has set a new goal for; the Kinsmen Club and • the meet will again be held on Civic Holiday. Proceeds go for club wel- fare elfare work. ' Secretary Elmer Thompson re- ports little ` difficulty in securing 'horses to. ' race at Kincardine while the improved pari -mutual ,betting booths will appeal, to the :... customers . who set a record last. year for patronage as they enjoy ' ed a real day of racing on one of Ontario's finest tracks, located on the inviting . shores of Lake Huron': in the town "where you're , . a stranger only once." or Lucknow Presbyterian rc hu ( Rev.: Roderick : MacLeod Minister SUNDAY, AUGUST 1 10:00 a.m. Sunday..
