Dairy w Princess
This is the 10th' anniversary :of
,the first ;county Dairy • Princess
Competition held in , Toronto. .. Since• .
the cpmpetition's, inception in
1656, it has developed into a maj-
or attraction at. the C.N.E., Each
year the number of - entries has;
risen until now ,o er. forty girls
will be competing for: the highly,
prized honour of becoming Ontar-
io Dairy Princess. To the winner;_
besides many small gifts, goes an
all expense; paid trip via B.Q.A.C..
to the United Kingdom. 'Last year
Elizabeth Crawford from. Welland
County . won the ' award. Mrs.
Crawford has since attended .:many
meetings and has done much in.'
the promotion of Ontario's • high
quality dairy products.
Here in Bruce County, • our : '64
Dairy Princess was' ' Joan Slade.
from Kincardine 'Twp. 'Joan. Won
the • event which ,was held in' con-
junction with Kincardine's Town
and Country Day, 1st July.' Al-
though :Joan did not get into the
semi-finals in ' Toronto, she did
make an ' excellent . showing ' and
was a credit to' our :county.
Bruce •County . is 'nowone of •the..
leading counties in Ontario's' main-
moth dairy industry. Our plants
combine to pro/Ince well over . a
million, pounds of butter' every
month. - The : U.D.P.C. plant . in
Tara .`last . year won the butter
championship, held : at the Royal'
Winter 'Fair` in, .Toronto. > This was
the highest scoring butter on ex-
hibit and it was the first time 'that.
the award . had ' come to Ontario..
All Bruce County residents • should'
be justly proud of ;their dairy 'far-
mers .and the plants which combin-.
ed to 'win this award. '
There are at the 'moment, about
1,500farmers shipping milk into
the three :powder' plants . in our' ar-
ea. These; plants '• are:. located ` at
Kincardine; . Tara and'. Teeswater.
The 'single cheese factory located
in :Bruce County 'is south : of : Kin-
cardine at Pine River: Cheese
fre this .plant has , a, i.r:eputation
of'. high's. quality, ' both n Canada
and the United States. This plant
is now producing close 'to two mil-
lion pounds' of cheese a year. We
also have ' over 2000 farm 'separ-
sated ' cream :.. shippers, and 80.
fluid milk 'shippers: ' These
farmers ; ship. to ' `dairies located
within . the county and a large
group 'ship " to the Toronto fluid
milk •market. The dairy, farmer
then in':Bruce-County, plays a very,
important • part in the economic
life ,of , this section of Ontario.:'
• On July i7th, the Bruce County
dairy' farmers and ' dairy 'plants
join
will forces. to sponsor the
County Dairy Princess Com'pet-.
ition. This will be held in conjunc-
tion with the ' Town and Country
Day in Kincardine '
• At this time; there are ten girls
who have, 'indicated their inten-
tion . to take part . in .the 'competi-
tion:. There are three ;girls from
the county ' area of ; Walkerton.
They ;are. Shirley. 3rocklebank,
Gertrude Manshanden. and Sharon
Prues. From the ' Tara area come
Helen Fenton, Audrey and Velma
Patchell,; and Jane .Posthunnus.
Other girls entered' are from' Pais-
ley ' — Marilyn' Gregg, froth Und-
erwood —• Pat ' Ribey, from ' Tees -
water ' ,Connie Renwick.'•
Previous: ; to the. ;competition in
the park at Kincardine, :the girls
will ,be guests at a luncheon,' fol-
lowing . which they are interview-
ed by the three judges.. The 'girls
will then be taken to . the compet-'
ition area in convertibles. as part
of ' 'a parade.: sponsored by, ' the
Bruce County Junior Farmers.
Before the.' gathered •.spectators,
each girl, will then; give a three
minute talk, ` pertaining . to. the
Dairy -Industry in her county. Af-
ter that, the .girls will be required
to assemble- • a milling machine,
milk a cow, dis-assemble; wash'
and properly store the machine
and equipment: The '.judges score
'the girls, half \ of the points ' being
slotted for the competitors inter-
view and speech, and the •other
half for the 'actual milking rou-
tine. The winner of our compet-
ition will go to Toronto about
three weeks, later and represent
'Bruce County against other
county contestants inthe C.N:E..
